If you are interested in that specifically, it is a very neat idea and for the low price... it ain't that bad of a choice.

I would suspect high temperatures when playing back large MPEG2 files or HD content, and if I were you I'd probably avoid playing anything intensive like that.

Also the company who makes that (HYFAI) has a newer version out that supports 5.1 discrete audio as opposed to the 2-channel stereo that version there only supports. You might want to look into that.

...
Personally I've never used it, but I have no necessity for it. My XBOX can read everything off the server which means I don't have to transfer files around and move stuff to get to my movies when I want to put something new out in the living room. If they have a version with SAMBA support or something you might want to check that out instead. It makes it much nicer just accessing the network for your stuff.

The problem is a lot of the network accessible media players out there stream the video via some crap program or WMP (i.e. the Media Center Extenders like the XBOX 360). This method is usually crap and limits the support of formats that you can watch. Where as stuff like Xbox Media Center or XBMC(different from Media Center Extender) or linux alternatives like Freevo can access the network and open just about any file format.

Either way though, that product there looks like a decent product if you don't mind walking back and forth every time you want to add new movies to its library. I'd suggest putting a smaller HDD in it for like 50 bucks (like a 120 to 200 gig) it'll hold a lot of stuff and if the drive craps out on you its not as big an issue then if you lose a 500 gigger for a much higher price tag.

...
oh and one last thing. If you have a XBOX 360 or PS3 you may want to wait... both are adding more and more support for different file formats. So you'd have an all in one answer right there. I'm not up on the PS3, but I know the 360 should be getting updates in a couple months for it. But don't put a ton of faith in that... you know how Microsoft can be sometimes.
