Pinholes vs Disc Rot
Pinholes vs Disc Rot
I've noticed that most of my dreamcast games have like very tiny pinholes where light penetrates right through it. Will this kind of thing affect playability? How large do the pinholes in the foil have to be in order to see problems like game freeze?

Any light shining thru, a sign of damage to the label side. A pic?

Aren't pinholes in disks a sign of disk rot?

That doesn't sound good at all. I'd consider getting replacements now before they fail.

Re: Pinholes in discs
You can basically see right through it on both sides when you put it against the light. I usually buy the games from ebay and I've been reading lately about this kind of things. They are very tiny though and cannot be seen w/o the light. Some say you can fix it by taping the label side but it will only be 70% fix or none at all. You know how most dreamcast games have no paint on the label side? Yea, the pinholes are usually located around there. I can only find about 1-3 very tiny pinholes on each disc.CRTGAMER wrote:Any light shining thru, a sign of damage to the label side. A pic?

Usually, and Dreamcast games are know to have this problem. If you can see light, hope that a part of the game is not in that area.Michi wrote:Aren't pinholes in disks a sign of disk rot?
Thanks everyone...
Re: Pinholes in discs
Scratches/defects/pinholes on the label side of the disc are far worse then the data side. They are also unfixable as far as i know. I looked into it a long while back and have never been able to buy any kind of used disc online since (got a few Gamecube games with the same pinholes you describe from ebay).

Re: Pinholes in discs
this is kinda crazy though, I've been buying quite a few of dreamcast games lately, so do you expect me to inform every seller about this? Do they get worse? My bro played Fighting Vipers 2 to death and he hasn't encountered any problems and it also had one little pinhole.

Re: Pinholes in discs
i think there is already a thread about this discussion. if i remember correctly, disc rot is very rare in current media and the pin holes are most likely due to scratches from piss poor handling of the discs.
if you took a shit, please put it back
Re: Pinholes in discs
I was told that disc rot should show discoloration of the foil and it shows like something is eating it away, but the pinholes may be caused by a bad press or disc rot.
