This is the reason I don't let people borrow my collection
I'm not talking about borrowing. I've had very bad experiences with my older sister while we were living in the same house, or even in the present, every time she's visiting me.

Ironically my ex-girlfriend got kind of sad once when she dropped my Mario Kart Wii disk on the floor.
You taught her well

My mom's cds in her car are in literally some of the worst shape I have EVER seen. She insists it's her cd player doing it, I think she's full of it because I've listened to my own cds in her car and they're all still practically new.

Unless those CDs have a consistent round scratch, then it wasn't the CD player doing it.

Also, I didn't teach my ex anything. She was just a logical person, who understands that when people pay money for something, they value it. I almost broke that copy of the game to show her that I don't care about material things, and that they could be replaced.

The thing is, I don't care for material things as long as it's an accident. If you park my car somewhere and a boulder falls on it and destroys it, I won't care. I'll only care for your safety.

On the other hand, if you crash my car cause you were checking your makeup in the mirror, then you are a moron and I will be very mad, cause that wasn't an accident it was your fault.

My sister really annoys me with my GameCube and Wii games because she'll leave the discs out on the floor or laying on the case. Sometimes she'll put it back in the case but not put it all the way in, leaving the bottom to get scratched by the spindle. :x

I hold back for when we're playing against each other and she decides to throw the controller at me.

Jesus, why do I let her play video games?

Wow. I would totally forbid my sister from touching any of my stuff if she did that.

That was the decision I made years ago with my younger siblings.

Na I really can't give them credit as CD's and DVD's can get scratched which I don't see as advantage.
You would have to be careful to not scratch them plus this has meant many used games / cd's you can buy might not work because they are scratched or repaired.
Also a lot of people are very careless I mean look at most cartridges most people have lost the box and instructions.
Some DVD's / CD's even come in replacement cases so you can't trust people and with that in mind I don't see CD and DVD as durable at all.

I mean you risk scratching the game and potentially losing all the data just by leaving it out of the case and sometimes a faulty laser can damage the disc.

I personally despise optical media, because in my eyes it represents corporations caring more about saving money than they do whether or not people's collections get damaged.

What Sony is doing now with blue rays and UMDs being built with more protection is nice, but it pisses me off that things were not done this way right from the get go, back when CDs first hit the market.

For pure durability, there is nothing on the market better than the Nintendo DS right now. Plastic cases for games(unlike those cardboard boxes snes games used to come in)and cartridge format for all of its titles. I love knowing that when I buy a DS game I am paying money for things that were built to last. I don't get that same feeling when I buy a 360 game or a Wii title. One good scratch would easily screw up any game on those consoles.

But what are you going to do? I'm not going to stop buying games or movies because I dislike the format
