console cd player Quality

I have a old yamaha cdx-493 cd player would I be better of using my xbox 360 as a cd player?
what I mean is what one has best sound quality.

Theoretically, since they both have digital output the sound should be the same when hooked up via optical or coax/hdmi respectively.

I concur. If using digital output on the player, it should be the same. I'm not an audiophile myself but I would think that even if one is using conventional connections that most modern DACs are pretty good and the output signal will be pretty much indistinguishable unless there some really crappy caps on the audio circuit. Any difference it likely to be in the amp or speakers you're using which isn't changing.
