On a local level it makes no sense... it's cheaper and easier to lay down cable then launch and maintain satellites up in space.

For long distance on the other hand it makes sense... and actually we DO use them for long distance. We the end user don't notice it because we connect to our ISP who stands higher in the global network.

If the problem is that you live in a country with a dated infrastructure then one solution would be to move to one with a better one. The US has several notoriously old systems be it power, water, transportation, or communication. Considering the area they cover and the costs involved, smaller countries have an easier time retro-fitting everything and wind up with faster transmission speeds.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
