In contrast to LCD displays, plasma televisions and CRT TVs have a virtually instantaneous response time that is at least a thousand times faster than that of the fastest LCDs.

It depends on the lightgun though. For example the NES DuckHunt lightgun the flashing screen method that turned the screen black with coloured (usually just white) boxes on the screen where the shootable objects were located. This does not require CRT.

Wait. Are you saying NES light-gun games would work on a non-CRT? (Where's my copy of Hogan's Alley!?)

Personally I love my 42" Panasonic plasma. I bought it mainly because the upscaler is extremely good. All my retro consoles look great on it via RGB SCART, crisp, clean. Perfect. On the other hand I have a 28" LCD monitor on my PC and it sucks for gaming. Lots of ghosting on fast moving bright objects on dark backgrounds. It's not terrible, but it is a little distracting. If you're planning on doing a lot of gaming on it, especially retro gaming you need to be looking at Panasonic or Pioneer, their upscalers are best in their class, every time.

It's been said many times before though. There simply is no substitute for going into the shop and looking at them for yourself. Even if you plan on buying online rather than the rip-off retailers. Just have look round and demo them for yourself. We can only tell you what looks good to us. What looks good to us, may not be what looks good to you. It's all subjective. Try before you buy.

There are three things you have to watch out for when buying a new HDTV and they are
Input lag (on native resolution and when deinterlacing)

motion blur (plasmas are usually better in this regard, LCDs try to combat it with 120Hz and create massive input lag)

240p compatibility especially on component inputs.

All of these vintage video game machines are almost always 240p (some games are 480i like ps2/gc and a handful of saturn/ps1/n64/snes). The problem is almost all HDTVS try to deinterlace this and cause input lag/artifacts/transparencies not working

If it were me I would just get a DVDO Edge/XRGB for near perfect compatibility when connecting to any flat panel.

I highly recommend any full HD 1080p 42/46/50 inch panasonic plasma.

Then you will have to sacrifice either size or features.

Not any easy choice.

LCDs are cheaper at lower sizes, but there are good Plasmas at the 42-48 range.

Seems good to me. But people are telling me that 720p plasmas are better than 1080p LCDs. Because of the fact that LCDs have between 60 and 240Hz's while all plasmas have 600Hz's by default.

Well, regardless of whether LCD or Plasma is better, Plasma costs a lot more. I'd go with LCD to save money.

If you dont want to spend a lot then LCD is the only real way to go.

Its cheapest models will always be cheaper.

I would suggest you try to get 1080P and 120Hz if possible.
