Favorite: Cartridges
Least Favorite: Compact Discs
Favorite Packaging: DVD Cases, Blu-ray Cases, DS game cases, UMD cases, Clam-shell cartridge cases. I actually really wish Blu-ray/DVD cases were closer to the size of Jewel Cases. This would be ideal to me.

Favourite and least-favourite storage mediums?
Re: Favourite and least-favourite storage mediums?
I like VHS tapes, because they're kinda sturdy, have decent video quality, and no one wants them anymore so everyone sells them to me for a dollar.
I don't like CD's or DVD's when they skip.
Otherwise I think I was born too early to experience any storage media I really "hate".

I love the big PC Boxes as well, especially the later ones that used better paper. I also like the medium sized PC Boxes especially the ones with flaps. Having PC games in standard DVD cases makes them feel less spectacular.General_Norris wrote:I love the old PC boxes. Big, with lots of content and awesome manuals. It's a shame that when you buy a new game it barely has a DVD in it. Fortunatedly, piracy is making publishers add more content like decent manuals and picture books.

I love most cartridges except n64, because there's no label on the side.
Also, gamecube disc are the best. So awesome.

Gamecube discs have one big flaw: they don't hold that much compared to a DVD. I think that might be part of why so many games last gen were released for PS2, Xbox, and PC, but skipped GCN. They did have the merit of being very durable. They can really take a beating before they stop working.SwooshBear wrote:I love most cartridges except n64, because there's no label on the side.

I always really liked HuCards. They're compact without being so tiny that they easily get lost, and they're pretty durable. The cases they came in were pretty nice, as they were basically CD style jewel cases, but they seem to be much more durable for some reason. The only downside to this format is that you couldn't save to the card.
As for least favorite, that would definitely be cassette tape. I have a high tolerance for load times, but even I don't think it's worth waiting 5-10 minutes for early 80s games. That, and I don't like having to rewind my games. The Coleco Adam made things even worse, as the tape player would erase tapes if you left them in while you turned the system on.

USB drives. Small game carts. Mini-DVD/wallets. CD cartridge. Micro/SD cards.
- Thumb-drives are versatile, functional, and a decent visible size. Also, they can have some cool models. The only drawback is how many cycles it can last.
- Small carts are just like their bigger cousins, but are lighter and more easily stored or bagged.
- Mini-DVDs are smaller, less likely to flex, and can still hold plenty. (Think mini-BluRay.)
- Before the tray-less DVD drives, older computers had a CD cart. You could lock the disc inside a plastic case that would slide into the CD slot like a cartridge. Much better protection.
- On the latter end of the spectrum are Micro-, Mini- and regular SD cards. They are functional, but can be a little too small at times.
Vinyl. VHS tapes. Tape backup. Magnetized plates. Saturn cases. GameCube dual-disc cases.
- Though they provide superior quality, analog mediums are alarmingly fragile. Vinyl can melt or even shatter; VHS tapes can be warped by gravity and demagnetize. Tapes are also annoyingly slow to read.
- Magnetized plates are great for storage and offer warnings signs, but they also incredibly fragile.
- US Saturn cases are big and brittle. In the UK, they are big and shred easily.
- Gamecube dual-disc cases are crap. Unlike the single disc case, which was hard to open unless you bend the case from the spindle, the dual-disc case has an even smaller gap between the teeth and the spindle (now a hexagon), and the spindles aren't even centered giving no room to warp the case.

Magnetic Core Memory - Non volatile and doesnt' need heavy shielding as it isn't affected by cosmic radiation when tooling around in outer space.
