PS3 Emulation Tutorial (GeoHot)

Post by Rurouni_Fencer »

I've been posting help to a ton of my friends on how to do this, and I figured I'd put it out here for anybody who might be clueless or on the edge about how to get emulators on their PS3.. I realize it's not a difficult mod to do, but a lot of us aren't exactly tech-savvy - This is why I'm writing this.

*obligatory "I'm not responsible for what you do to your console" spiel..*

What you Need:

- GeoHot's CFW
- multiMAN (file manager)
- Emulators (ported versions for GeoHot)
- a USB stick
- teh roms
- a PS3 (omg rly??)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1 - installing the Custom FirmWare (CFW)

Ripped directly from PS3-hacks.com (http://www.ps3-hacks.com/2011/01/08/ps3 ... -released/)
"Extract and copy the update file — PS3UPDAT.PUP — to /PS3/UPDATE on a USB mass storage device. Connect that device to your PS3 and flash it through Settings -> System Update."
After you update the firmware, your PS3 will NOT restart by itself - don't freak out, this is normal. Just wait until it shuts off by itself, and manually turn it back on. When the cross menu screen comes up, you'll see '* Install Package Files' under the 'Games' tab. That's the only indication you'll see that it worked.
It's that easy!

Step 2 – Using multiMAN to transfer ROMs from USB to HDD

Download and extract multiMAN.pkg onto your USB stick.
Download and extract ROMs into a single folder on the USB for each system. (For this Tutorial, we'll be using NES, SNES, and Genesis.)
(Some Emulators may support .zip file formats - check the docs for information.)
Insert the USB drive into your PS3 and select the '*Install Package Files' option. Select multiMAN and wait for the program to install.

-boot up multiMAN backup manager
*remove any disc currently in PS3 drive*
- press Select & Start, to access file directory
- you’ll see two sets of identical directories, one set on the Left Side, and one on the Right side
- Point arrow to the Right Side first, (this is your target directory.)
- click on dev_hdd0
- click on GAMES
- Move arrow to the Left Side
- click on dev_usb001
- move arrow to the folder containing the ROMs you wish to copy and press O (circle), then press 'Yes'. Rinse and repeat as needed for each system.

Step 3 – Accessing the Roms via Emulators

*These directions work for FCEU, Snes9X, & Genesis Plus*
- boot up FCEU, Snes9X, or Genesis Plus
- go to dev_hdd0
- go to GAMES
- go to NES (if using FCEU), or
- go to SNES (if using Snes9X), or
- go to Genesis (if using Genesis Plus)

You should be all set to run emulators on your PS3! Enjoy!

If I missed something, or you have questions or suggestions, let me know! I realize I didn't include links to ROMs - you're on your own for those..
Also, this is my first Tutorial - be gentile.. :|

Definitely not a bad idea to hold off - There is so much shovel-firmware at the moment it's ridiculous, (unless you've got the skills of, say, Niode, and you can backwards engineer code on just about anything. )

But just to be clear - If you ARE interested in having Nintendo/Sega emulation on your PS3, it doesn't get any simpler than this - and I doubt it ever will, (unless downloading a magic modding fairy becomes possible and it waves it's magic wand and makes the mod magically appear on your system.) FBA on the PS3 is AWESOME! I'm just waiting for the eventual perfect N64, PC-Engine, and Sega Saturn emulators to arrive..

But again, if emulation isn't as appetizing to your ears as the impending homebrew that skilled bedroom developers and coders are going to unleash - sit tight, and just keep up with the scene.. 8)

If you want to run backups on your PS3 then here's my build of Kmeaw's CFW. Follow the instructions inside.

Sony just released firmware update 3.56.. This will effectively kill your emulators. It's only a matter of time before somebody makes an updated custom firmware to enable emulators to run on 3.56, but for the meantime - you cats have two options:

Do NOT update to 3.56, and keep your GeoHot emulators at the risk of being unable to go online,
or..
You'll need to go back to OFW (original firmware) 3.55, and still be able to get online.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT download the Sony 3.56 update without restoring Sony's official 3.55 firmware first.. There's a chance it could brick the PS3, and you don't want to risk that..

My suggestion is to first change your DNS setting like this:

Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings > OK > Custom > wired > Manual Settings > Auto > Auto > Do Not Set > Manual > Primary DNS = 67.202.81.137 Secondary DNS = 67.202.81.137 > Automatic > Do Not Use > Enable > X

This should let you keep the hack and stay online for a little while longer, (before Sony figures out how to disable this..)

Side note: I tried Niode's build of Kmeaw and he couldn't have made it simpler.. If backing up your Blue-Ray game discs onto your PS3's HDD is something you're interested in, Niode's build is awesome!
Thanks again, N!

Does this stuff still work with the current firmware. Navigating sites like dashhacks is a real pain in the ass.

I'm not sure, but I can look into it.. From what I understand, the method in the OP won't work with anything after 3.55. The last I remember was Sony going to 3.56 and ever since there hasn't been anything done with geohot's hack, (obviously due to his legal sitch.)

If I recall correctly, I think there is another method of putting Linux onto the PS3 that came about after 3.56, but I'm not 100% sure, as I've left my PS3 offline since 3.56 to preserve my CFW. But if you are still on 3.55 or below, (and can upgrade to 3.55,) the OP will still work!

Anybody else out there know anything about it? Niode? :?:
