Skate323k137's NAOMI / Supergun project thread

Post by skate323k137 »

Starting this thread so I can post as I progress working on my NAOMI / Supergun type setup. At this point I do not plan to wire in a video encoder, since the NAOMI has VGA out right on it (untill/unless I purchase other JAMMA boards anyway)

Right now I've assembled all the parts I should need, aside from wood to build the arcade sticks and misc hardware for them.

Image

Far left pile is from lizardlick.com. Jamma harness, power supply, buttons, joysticks, microswitches, and power cord.

The grey cables are DB15's and also a pile of DB15 solder connectors for making controller ports at the JAMMA harness and sticks. This way the cords are interchangeable and not permanently attached to anything. This all came from winford engineering in my home state of MI (winford.com)

The other bag of cords has the VGA cord, USB cord, and RCA audio. It also has the capcom kick harness for buttons 4 through 6, since JAMMA technically only goes to three buttons per player. This kick harness connection on the CAPCOM I/O can also be used for two extra players with three buttons each instead of the kick buttons for 1p/2p with appropriate switch setting. There's also the power cord that goes from the capcom I/O to the NAOMI, so that a Sega power supply isn't needed (unless you need extra power for a GD-ROM drive)

Then of course on the right is the NAOMI itself, with a MvC2 cart installed. I included a dreamcast in this picture for size reference, since I always thought these things were smaller from the pictures I've seen. Yes, that is a big effing cartridge :)

The silver box is the capcom I/O, for connecting to JAMMA for controllers. It can also be used to amplify audio and pass through the video to a "normal" arcade monitor setup.

This is gonna take a while....

Hooked the power cord to the power supply, adjusting voltages. Seems this "meanwell" power supply from lizardlick as a discrepancy b/t the voltages, as dialing 5v to exactly 5v leaves 12v .4v short. Right now I'm sitting at 5.18 and 11.9, waiting on an opinion from some folks at the sega-naomi forums before I hook this to my new toy.

edit; voltages vary loaded/unloaded. wired everything up and the 12v straightened itself out.

put aside the extra coin door wires, video lines, and audio wires from JAMMA as those won't be needed thanks to direct RCA audio and VGA on the NAOMI itself. Mounted everything down and fired it up into test mode. No controller ports wired yet, but touching coin or start to ground had the desired effect of course. It was very pleasing to see the NAOMI splash screen :)

Cool setup man. I am totally ignorant to the Naomi or such a setup. But anything with MVC2 is awsome 8)

Finished all the soldering on the NAOMI end, kick harness and all. It took a while to get the db15's right, but pre-tinning the wires did the trick very well. I cut and assembled the MDF for the sticks, I'm going to try to seal/paint them in the next day or two. I found that, though expensive, forstner bits (used for flat bottom holes) were very efficient for clean drilling of the button/joystick holes with minimum back splintering and w/o needing a pilot bit. At this point, once I seal up/paint the MDF, it's a matter of dropping in the buttons/joysticks and soldering up the connections for those (and praying to god the pinout I found for the capcom kick harness was correct)

Agreed. I'll have to remember this thread for when I make my Dreamcast arcade.

Thanks fellas. My buddy camera-phoned me this, as I can't paint at my apartment so I'm having him do a quick spray job and a couple coats of urethane sealant for sweat protection on the sticks while I'm at work. I should be able to finish them up tonight or tomorrow, if I have the patience to solder two more db15's up when I get home.
