Top 25 Killer Apps for the NES Powerpak

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

I finally finished something I've been working on for months now: my list of the top 25 killer apps for the NES Powerpak. I also posted this in the Nintendo subforum, but felt I should also include it here in case you guys don't frequent the subforum. I dont usually double post, but I think you guys will want to read this one!

Calling these "apps" instead of games or ROMs completely confused me as to what was gonna be on this list!

You asked about the Aladdin mapper. I have two different Aladdin pirate ROMs on my computer, and they use mapper 4 (MMC3) and mapper 10 (MMC4). These aren't "pirate mappers". They're just regular old NES mappers.

Also, where Blade Buster is mentioned, I think Recca should have already been mentioned.

Blade Buster is awesome, but you can only play it for a few minutes at a time.

Thanks. Seems weird that Aladdin runs on a common mapper. I guess that's why it's more stable than other pirates.

As for Recca....I was thinking of putting it in the list, but I wanted to keep it a non-commercial release affair. The English translation for it only affects the titlescreen, and I also don't quite feel Recca is for everyone. It's impressive and holyshitthisisonmyfamicomwhat but Recca is full of so much dying that unless you're an absolute master or using cheats there's more game out of even the timed Blade Buster experience.

Huge Insect FTW!!

Anyway, good list man. My only thought is you went slightly overboard with Mega Man-related stuff, and somehow didn't include that Famicom bootleg of Final Fantasy VII.

I updated it slightly to remove Micky Mania 7 because it doesn't work and replaced it with the worth Ganbare Goemon 2.

noiseredux, do you have the rom of the Famicom bootleg of FFVII? Also isn't it in Chinese? Even if it were to work on the Powerpak, I'm not sure I would recommend it as a killer app. These are all games anyone should be able to enjoy. FFVII in Chinese for an 8-bit console doesn't quite fit that

It has an English patch. I have the translated ROM, if you want it just PM me your email and I'll send it to you. I just checked it in NES Mapper Program and it said it uses mapper 3 (common) which is definitely supported by the PowerPak.

A lot of people dig this game. Not sure if it's just for FF nuts or if there's something to it. I've had a few people inquire about this game as a reproduction. I played it for a few minutes a while back, it seems alright. I might give it a shot one day. I've had a few people inquire about this game as a reproduction.

But there's definitely a lot of interest in this game, so you might consider putting it on your list.

I found it if yr interested -- English translated version of FFVII on the NES. Very very impressive if yr not familiar... and honestly this a much more enjoyable game than Kart Fighter.

You know, I just remembered something. Any game with a PRG or CHR larger than 512KB will not work on the PowerPak. This is because 512KB is the size of the flash memory the PowerPak uses to load ROM data onto. The Chinese FF7 is a 2MB ROM, which is extraordinarily huge for a NES ROM, and much too large for the PowerPak to load. And now I remember debating with some one if a reproduction would be possible due to the size.
