We get mad at Japan for that? We sanitize our own history.Michi wrote:They'll teach a course about anything, so you're probably not to far off the mark.D.D.D. wrote:But on the topic, why censor something that has been out there for years? I mean, I read somewhere that they don't discuss it in schools and isn't editing Huckleberry Finn sort of the same thing. Sanitizing it just makes it look more like they want to ignore racism rather than address it and, personally, I think that's the wrong way to go and the wrong message to send. Ignoring something doesn't make it go away.

I think that just about every country sanitizes their own history to some extent
Re: Sanitizing Huckleberry Finn
does this mean that Rush needs to do some sanitizing as well?

Every country sanitizes their own history to make things not look as bad as it was. Perhaps it just seems that Japan does a bit more than most other countries but then again, I don't know other counties "true history" well so it very well could be equal.Michi wrote:They'll teach a course about anything, so you're probably not to far off the mark.D.D.D. wrote:But on the topic, why censor something that has been out there for years? But about Japan, yeah, all the stuff we learn in the states, my wife didn't learn about it until college abroad. She was kinda shocked to say the least.

Weird how stuff pops back in your head.
I remember as a kid in Elementary school there were four of us reading off a Tom Sawer book. Each one of us would portray a character while reading. The teacher would do the narrative between the speaking parts. I must have been Huck, because I got laughter when I mentioned carrying a dead cat quoted by my lines from the book. A nice moment, I made the entire class laugh.
The point
Maybe a different time and obscured childhood memories. But I really don't remember racial negatives in the words or a phrase that would get animal rights groups in an uproar. The ignorance and innocence of youth, maybe we sometimes need that to keep us "wiser" adults in track.

Hopefully your school district will let the teacher teach you about the context and whatnot instead of babying everyone.SwooshBear wrote:My english 3 honors class is supposed to be reading Huck Finn sometime this semester. I wonder how that will go...

That would make the class far more enjoyable.Hobie-wan wrote:Hopefully your school district will let the teacher teach you about the context and whatnot instead of babying everyone.SwooshBear wrote:My english 3 honors class is supposed to be reading Huck Finn sometime this semester.
