Hey I started Mas Effect not long ago as well. I also went to Noveria first and that battle took me a looong time to get through. I felt like a bit of it was luck because every now and they I'd get blasted right at the beginning and not have a chance. Here's what worked for me. Use biotics on the first Asari at the top of the stairs, then run to the right and hide behind the crates. Kill the others from there then run to the other side of the room and some more baddies will come out (iirc some have sniper rifles). After that it shouldn't be too hard to clean up the stragglers and go after blue Deanna Troi. Oh, and don't forget to use grenades, the button is awkward but they helped me a lot.

That was essentially what I did, but I can see why the OP got frustrated with it. It probably took me 6-10 tries to finally figure out the proper strategies for each segment of the battle.

That said, this has been the only "hard" fight in the game so far - are there others I can look forward to? (a simple yes/no will suffice!)

To be honest I never found that fight hard; nailed it the first time through. But there are one or more fights of that difficulty coming up.
