How was this? The graphics are amazing, does it play as well as the original?

Here's what I have gathered from forums I've been to. The characters you recruit are random, and don't seem to factor into the story as much as the original. In fact, the story as a whole is supposedly not as enjoyable unless you've played the first(which perhaps you already have).
From what I have heard the combat has more depth than the original and the game is a bit harder. The game is no longer non-linear and I don't think there is any kind of time limit like the original. Structurally, the game seems to be more streamlined, but the combat and dungeons are true to the original but improved.
I have a copy of VP 2, but never really played it. I want to get my hands on a copy of the original and play that first.
