My FPS playing TF2 are horrible and N64 graphics don't work

Post by Erik_Twice »

Around the Halloween update I had to stop playing TF2. I lagged and playing, specially at a competitive level, was impossible. Thinking it was caused by my internet connection I had no choice but turn to other games.

Some time later I realized that just around that time I got two more screens that I instantly hooked to my computer and perhaps they were the cause. I decided to lower my graphical settings to see if that was the cause.

Even on a single screen with the others idle my FPS didn't rise from 20 FPS. Worse of all, the performance with the game running on all three screens was very similar. I tried N64-level graphics but it didn't help at all.

What could cause this? I used to run the game at max graphics and GPUZ, while not showing me how much the GPU is being used for some reason, tells me it is not running out of memory.

My specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.40GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT (Main GPU)
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (Used only to connect the left screen)
And 3 or 4 GB of RAM, I don't remember right now.

Any help?

When you say you tried single screen, did you just turn off the monitors or did you unhook and/or mark them as unattached in display options?

I just let them be, I didn't mark them as unattached. Should I disconnect them and change my config?

If your machine is bogging down because it can't handle pumping out 3 screens worth of 3d imagery, then just turning them off or disconnecting them physically if windows still thinks they are there are it is sending a signal to them. Go into display properties and see if you still have 3 boxes representing the screen. In XP it dims ones that aren't 'attached', I can't remember what vista/W7 do. Try making sure you get back down to 1 screen then check performance in the game.
