Dammit! Another slippery slope

Post by Scooter »

I've been on a real collector's binge since last Fall. Luckily I really only own Sega machines (for my retro stuff anyway) so I'm at least limited to only collecting for those machines (Game Gear, Genesis, Master System, 32X, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast).

But recently a trade offer came my way that led to me being the proud owner of a very nice, boxed N64 system. This led me to buying all the accessories I needed like memory cards, S-video cables, an extra controller and of course games. The system is coming with one controller, a memory card, two rumble packs, RCA cables and power source. It has been modified to also play imports.

So far, the games I own are:
*Super Mario 64
*Beetle Adventure Racing
*Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
*Legend of Zelda Medora's Mask

The guy I traded with was so happy with the trade that he is throwing in a copy of Jet Assault Gemini. Looks like I'm off to a good start, I hope this doesn't open up a whole new area of collecting "need" as storage is getting scarce and I already don't have room for another console!

what does it take to play N64 imports? does yours play PAL or NTSC-J or just whatever you throw at it?

I haven't heard of Jet Assault Gemini, is that regional renaming of Jet Force Gemini?
Jet Force Gemini is good for a hidden gem, but I feel it gets a little overhyped by the some in the retro crowd.

without going overboard on N64 stuff, I would suggest Mario Kart 64 and Star Wars Rouge Squadron to your must have list

My mistake, I meant Jet Force Gemini.

Goldeneye.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

play and love the games you have first for sure! don't get swept up into building a huge collection and never being able to play them because you're overwhelmed with games!

but consider these games to go on your future list:
-goldeneye (seconded!)
-banjo kazooie (great mario-like 3d platformer)
-mystical ninja starring goemon (mario 64 with a blue pineapple-headed hero in medieval japan)
-starfox 64 (great "rail" shooter)
-mario kart 64 (get it for the 4-player battle game, less for the racing)

i believe these all to be general classics, goemon is highly underrated and a bit under the radar

If are someone who likes Goldeneye then you'll want to pick up Perfect Dark as well. If you ask me improves on Goldeneye in just about every way and makes use of the expansion pak (which I assume you have?). I'd also recommend Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (though the PC version is superior but you might have trouble running on modern PC).

I saw an N64 import adaptor at a mall last year for like $10, so i guess there is some degree of protection from plastic tabs to regional lockout
