Lol, I forgot to include the reason why I put Nu Metal in quotes. I've been putting Nu Metal in quotes because (to my knowledge) it's not a genre. Listening to Nu Metal songs, I've been able to place them in genres that existed before Nu Metal.

My opinion is that most of those bands are junk. It's just all too accessible for me. Radio metal doesn't really get a lot of love for me since I view it in the same way that I view radio country: all filler, no killer. I just wanna hear some awesome riffs and blazing drums and some decent lyrics most of the time; nu metal typically doesn't offer any of these things.

Most nu metal I've heard seems like more of a post-grunge meets Pantera thing. I hear plenty of genuine influence from bands like Godflesh too.

I try not to throw a fit about it, since I find that most people who want to namedrop a band like Slipknot when discussing metal probably aren't involved enough with what they listen to to care about genres anyhow.

It seems I've fallen out of love with metal over the past few years. When I entered college I listened to Turisas, Amon Amarth, Dragonforce, Lordi, and Iced Earth quite a bit and would listen to other bands like Disturbed, System of a Down, and Lincoln Park somewhat. I was also pretty in J-Rock and I listened to X Japan, Luna Sea, and Dir en Grey all the time. My musical tastes have since broadened considerably and I listen to Metal a lot less often than I used to. But now that its winter I'm listening to Turisas again just because the music matches the season so much.

Yes, I love this song. Haha. I love the personification of metal compared to the other genres. Really amusing.

Can anybody recommend some good bands to check out? I need some more heavy stuff for my iPod. Anything along the lines of the follwoing would be awesome: Pantera, Bullet for My Vallentine, (old)Atreyu, Korn, Five Finger Death Punch, Type O Negative, Alice In Chains, Kill Switch Engage, All That Remains, Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying, etc. You get the point. Thanks!
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

Hmm, maybe it should be called Grunge-Groove?

There's usually two types of people Slipknot droppers belong to:
The group you mentioned that doesn't care about musical genres or if they know jack shit about music.
Or:
Guys who see people say that Slipknot/KoRn/whatever, aren't Metal and feel that they have to be counter-culture and say it is.

I don't really like any of the bands you mentioned, but since it's been about two weeks since this topic has seen a post, I thought I'd help.

Bullet for My Vallentine, Atreyu, Kill Switch Engage, Lamb of God - Try The Red Chord, they're a pretty underrated Metalcore band. I haven't listened to them, but The Devil Wears Prada (they're not in the Metal-archives anymore for some reason) is a pretty popular Metalcore band.
Five Finger Death Punch - Vinne Paul from Pantera started a band called HellYeah, that (from what I've heard) sounds similar to FFDP.
All That Remains - A Melodic Deathcore band I like is The Black Dahlia Murder. Their earlier stuff (A Cold Blooded Epitaph) sounds a bit like At the Gates, but their newer stuff leans to the Deathcore side. Also look into Blackest Dawn and [url-http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=102219]The Agonsit[/url]
Type O Negative - I haven't listened to these guys, but according to Metal-Archvies they're Doom Metal. Try CandleMass, St. Vitus, or Celtic Frost's last album Monotheist. If you like Monotheist, check out Triptykon.
Alice In Chains - I don't know if you like their Grunge material or their Heavy Metal material better. If you like their Grunge stuff, check out Trapt. They play Post-Grunge.
Pantera - Diamond/Dimebag Darrell started a band after Pantera folded called DamagePlan. For some reason, many classic Thrash Metal bands really liked Pantera's sound, so they released Groove Metal albums in the mid to late ninties. Many Thrash bands hate this because it essentially killed Thrash until the mid-2000s when Thrash Metal had gotten a revial.
Some of the Thrash Metal bands that released Pantera-ish albums are:
Anthrax
Overkill
Destruction
Death Angel
Exodus

The band Exhorder has often been credited for creating Groove Metal.

EDIT: Shit, I forgot to mention this:

As I Lay Dying - A couple of the members of As I Lay Dying have a side-project called Austrian Death Machine, a Metal band whose lyrical content is all about Ahnuld!
