Could somebody please explain the Street Fighter series?

Post by Jamisonia »

As an only child I never really got into fighting games as a child. Now my girlfriend and I have started to play some of the Street Fighter fighting games and we're really enjoying them, so I'd like to start at the beginning. Since I don't have a TurboGrafx 16 I plan to start with Street Fighter II. The only issue is I'm very confused about the order in which these games were released and what exactly was the differences. Could somebody explain all this to me or link to a clear and concise website that does. I've noticed that most sites that deal with this tend to muck the console versions and the arcade versions making it even more confusing, and I'm only interested in understanding the difference between the console version.

Not sure if you wanted just info on the Street Fighter II series or what, but as far as the SNES versions go:

Street Fighter II: the original game, ported to the SNES.

Street Fighter II Turbo: Makes the boss characters playable and adds a new "turbo" feature that allows you to adjust the speed of the gameplay.

Super Street Fighter II: Adds 4 new characters, some new animation frames and moves for existing characters, recolored backgrounds, and remixed music. Gameplay balance tweaks too of course.

You aren't missing anything by skipping out on SF1 by the way. It's pretty awful, almost unplayable even.

oh man where to begin..... anyways just play them!

dont worry about the first game, its okay but not really worth your time. when sf2 came out thats when it really got fun.

You dont need a turbograpix to play the first game. its on the ps2 game Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2

It would take too long to explain the order of the games, I'm sure someone here will post a link to a website that should explain it to you.

basically early games have no super bars on the bottom. when revisions come out, more little things were added. The later games are a little more complicated and require more practice. but you should get okay in no time.

Many people have played these games constantly and know the characters special moves and slight differences in playing. And they play other characters in it to learn their moves.

My faves are the Capcom vs SNK series, theres no plot to them since they dont need it. but they are still fun to play them. They are not too overly complicated compared to marvel vs capcom. so you should do okay.

you can play them all, but pick your faves and go with it. There's nothing wrong with that

What system do you have? If you want the original arcade versions i would recommend getting the two Capcom Collections for PS2. They have ports of the original arcade versions. Otherwise I would recommend either Street Fighter II Turbo for SNES or Street Fighter II' Special Championship Edition for Genesis. Both are pretty similar and I can recommend them because I actually have those.

About 2 weeks ago I was in the same boat as you. I had never played Street Fighter before as it wasn't popular in my town at all growing up (we were too small of a town to have an arcade or cabs outside of that golf game). I never had any real exposure to the series until a few years ago and I still didn't play it as I didn't have any interest in 2D fighters at that point. I recently picked up Capcom Classics Collection Vol 1 on PS2 and would highly recommend getting picking up a copy since you can play the original, Champion Edition, and Hyper Fighting. This allows you to see some of the differences and pick which one you'd like to start with (I'm starting with the original since it seems to be easier than Hyper Fighting which is kicking my ass).

On a semi-related note the day after I picked up Capcom Classics Collection my wife said that she was going to have a couple of her college friends over for a dinner party. I was bummed as I was excited about playing Street Fighter and wanted to practice or have one of my brothers over to play. After supper my wife's best friend saw my SNES and started freaking out. She asked if we could play and I expected something like playing Super Mario World and Donkey Kong County. Instead she was all about Pocky & Rocky and Sunset Riders. After my respect for my wife's best friend just doubled she asked if I had Street Fighter II. We played for about an hour while my wife watched with a bored/horrified look on her face (she hated watching Blanka's move where he bites people in the head). My wife's friend was thinking about buying a SNES just for SFII but since she has a Wii I showed her Virtual Console and she's been getting really into that now.

Later on that week, lo and behold, I went to my local game store and they just purchased an SFII arcade cab and Marvel Vs Capcom II cab. Now believing God himself wants me to get into SFII I played the cab for a while, doing surprisingly well against the computer. Almost immediately two guys in the store recognized the music and came over and started playing as well. Needless to say I was nothing short of awful compared to them. Regardless after five minutes of playing against them at the cab I understood how and why SFII was so popular. Needless to say that was the most awesome introduction to a game series I've ever had.

It's terrible because it's not fun at all and barely works, regardless of how the AI is. Unless you're trolling the entire series.

I agree that is a good place to start and you get a strong version for either system.
