Any Dragon Ball Fans

Post by BurningDoom »

I've been a Dragon Ball fan since I was a young teenager about the age of 13. Before that I simply hadn't heard of it. It was around, but I didn't really see it until Dragonball Z aired the first time on Cartoon Network. I started on Dragonball Z, then watched Dragon Ball, and lastly saw Dragon Ball GT. But I never got to finish it. I watched up until most of the of the way through the Bebei Saga. So I never saw Super Android 17 Saga, and I never saw the Dragons Saga (or whatever it was called).

A Questionnaire for Fans:

Which is your favorite Dragon Ball Series? Dragon Ball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT, or Dragonball Z Kai?

Dragonball Z for me. It had the best storyline, and coolest battles. As well as a higher quality of art and animation when compared to the original series.

Which is your favorite Dragon Ball Movie?

Brolly: The Legendary Super-Saiyan. Such brutal battles in that. And even a little bit of a sci-fi/fantasy feel thrown in.

Which storyline/saga is your favorite?

The Frieza saga. Frieza just seemed like the most ruthless and evil villain in the series. He seemed to me to the be the hardest villain to overcome for the Z-Fighters as well. And of course this is the first time you see Goku go Super-Saiyan and the coolest time you see it.

But I also really liked the Demon King Piccolo storyline in the original Dragon Ball. It really was, by far, the most epic storyline in Dragon Ball up to that point. Things got serious with that storyline. Krillin & Master Roshi died (albeit both were resurrected by the Dragon Balls), Goku was almost killed. And this was the first time you as a fan actually wondered if Goku could defeat him on his own.

Which Z-Fighter is your favorite?

Goku, of course. He's the star.

Which villain was your favorite?

I'll just copy and paste my answer from an above question here:
Frieza just seemed like the most ruthless and evil villain in the series. He seemed to me to the be the hardest villain to overcome for the Z-Fighters as well. And of course this is the first time you see Goku go Super-Saiyan and the coolest time you see it.

I was really into DBZ when I was younger while Cartoon Network was showing it. I thought GT was awful.

About a year or two ago I tried to marathon all of DB through DBZ. I got through every single episode of Dragonball but ended up stopping at the Captain Ginyu fight in DBZ. DBZ drags a LOT more than I seem to remember... I don't know why I put up with it so much as a kid.

I'm a big fan as well. I watch Dragon Ball Kai weekly, it's so awesome. This week's episode, Goku battling Cell, was terrific.

Anyway, as to your questions:

Favorite series: Dragon Ball Z, but I enjoy the original one immensely as well. If you're more into the martial arts stuff, I recommend that people watch the original starting from the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai. The fights really pick up from then on. Although I do like Dragon Ball Z, power scaling really renders a lot of characters meaningless.

Favorite movie: None. There always seem to be something off about them. I guess it's because they don't fit into the storyline and so they're difficult for me to accept. It seems that they could put any characters there instead of Goku and friends and they would be the same. That said, I liked the Jump special that aired two years ago. It was light and entertaining, while still retaining the action of DBZ.

Favorite storyline: Cell arc. Themes of parenthood and realizing and overcoming one's own limitations were more present here than in any other arc, and thus I enjoy it a lot. Goku really shows how far he's come in maturity, fighting style and so on (although I didn't like that he gave a Senzu bean to Cell. Granted, Goku always gambles with the evildoers, but that seemed to go overboard). I also love the scene in which Tien, being vastly overpowered by Cell, still manages to hold him off. Classic.

That said, I don't dislike any of the arcs of the original or the Z series. Sometimes people complain about the Majin Boo arc, as if Toryiama dropped the ball by then. I disagree, I think it was a great closure to a wonderful series. Majin Boo was the most powerful villain ever, and he succeded where every other villain had failed: he actually killed off the entire Earth population and then destroyed the planet, proceeding to destroy a bunch of other planets in succession. That he was killed with a Spirit Bomb by Goku was only fitting.

I would comment on the quality of the GT series, but I can't talk about something that doesn't exist.

Favorite character: Piccolo. I really like his evolution as a character. He's a bit of a mix between Goku and Vegeta in my mind, not too soft, not too ruthless.

Best villain: I think it was Freeza as well. Freeza was the only one that actually seemed unbeatable in the whole series. When he's introduced, he's really far, far above all the other fighters. By the time the other villains are presented, there are plenty of ways of catching up to them. There just wasn't against Freeza.

I loved Dragonball, but DBZ was horrible. It threw away everything that made Dragonball an adventure, and instead turned the series into screaming matches. Also am I the only one who thinks Toriyama clearly wanted to end the series with Frieza? I mean the Cell and Buu story arc's kept dragging on and on and it was obvious he just didn't know where the story was going.

On the other hand the original Dragonball is a blast. Songoku running around the world, visiting new fantastic places, having amazing adventures, every episode was something new. I loved the Red Ribbon arc, only cause he visited so many different places (the snow country, the abandoned underwater cavern pirate base, the tall tower he climbed).

My favorite villain was either Piccolo (the second) or Frieza (which was also the only arc I liked from DBZ, only cause planet Namek reminded me of the theme of exploring exotic locations of the original DB, and because Frieza was the first villain that actually gave you reason to shit your pants (planet destroyer and all).

My favorite character was Kuriilin, but this being Dragonball, and him not being Songoku, he never did anything amazing.

Also god I love that intro theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3k_KoOgeR0

also the Greek version which brings me back to 1995 when I was 8 and heard this theme for the first time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDDS_rwnDcM

(there are rumors going around that the ones singing it are 2 very well known Greek artists but no one is sure)

EDIT

My favorite movie, was the only movie I actually liked, the one with Son Goku's father. That was really epic, AND mostly cannon (though there is a pretty big contradiction with the anime about how exactly the Sayians acted before their planet was destroyed)

Which is your favorite Dragon Ball Series? Dragon Ball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT, or Dragonball Z Kai?

Dragonball, it was the first one I watched. I like how the show was more comedic than Z and had a lot of villains with wacky powers. I took Tae Kwon Do and Karate as a kid so I also liked how it was more about martial arts and fighting tournaments than Z and GT were. I also liked how most episodes were self contained and I never felt like the episodes dragged on to fill up time *cough*Frieza Saga*cough*.

Which is your favorite Dragon Ball Movie?

Dragonball: Mystical Adventure. I just really liked how almost all of the events in Dragonball prior to the Piccolo saga were contained in one awesome movie. It also had a tag team battle with Goku and Arale versus Tao Pai Pai.

Which storyline/saga is your favorite?

The Red Ribbon Army Saga. That saga had so many awesome villains and memorable characters. It also had Tao Pai Pai, which is a big plus.

Which Z-Fighter is your favorite?

Kid Goku. Before he was made into an unstoppable force that made all other characters(besides Gohan and Vegeta) obsolete in battle.

Which villain was your favorite?

Tao Pai Pai. He was the first villain that seemed to be a real threat to Goku. He also has the funniest fight scene in all of Draghonball with General Blue. He killed him only using his tongue. How badass is that?

The original intro is amazing.

You're right that Dragon Ball ceased being about adventure, but that happened during the original series (when Piccolo was introduced, the manga was already about martial arts mainly). You may remember that the original/Z distinction is anime only, on manga is all only "Dragon Ball".

One Piece is a like a continuation of the original Dragon Ball in that regard. It's crazier, actually. As I read somewhere, One Piece is like a child's toy chest: spacemen next to cowboys next to dinosaurs, humans can be 2, 3 or 6 meters (edit: not foot!) tall, everyone has a different power.

hehe, exactly. That's why I love one piece. It's my favorite anime ever. But let's not hijack this thread.

I guess you are right, but even up to the King Demon Piccolo arc it felt like an adventure, and then there was the final Tenkaichi Budokai arc (please don't call it Tenkaichi Budokai tournament, cause that's like saying tenkaichi tournament tournament  ) which we can kind of say was still a part of dragonball, since the tournaments always played a big role in the story (the son goku vs kame shenin battle was epic)

Another good piece of music from that show

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqTwQ_6N4HY

when goku and the old geezer were fighting with all the strength they had left, with this playing in the background, it was fucking epic.

BTW did the American dub change the episode music as well?

Cause I know they raped this wonderful song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtFMwF7CKGo

in order to broadcast the show with this piece of crap

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-Hjf43k3Cs

Though nothing is as bad as to what happened to poor One piece

Epic Japanese opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhitYori7SU

.....rap American opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLTlH7KB0Xk

and for comparison's sake, here is the epic German version, which is nothing like the original but it's badass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-yI57yiNYA

It does totally feel like The Frieza Saga was a complete, and satisfying ending. It seems the rest after that was simply to add more characters and higher power-levels.
