thinking of getting a game gear
thinking of getting a game gear
I am thinking of picking up a game gear since they are dirt cheap and thanks to nathanbarnatt and especially noiseredux who has given me some feedback on getting into the gameboy, I'm loving the portable generation. What are anybody's thoughts on this? Which are the must have's for the gg? Or should I even bother and not waste my money since i have a gba sp. Thanks

Re: thinking of getting a game gear
Well the Master System Sonic games are excellent. Almost as good as Sonic The Hedgehog on Mega Drive, and imo better than Mario 1 and 2 on the NES.
Just make sure to have a bunch of rechargeable batteries around.

Re: thinking of getting a game gear
Still trying to fix my game gears. My friend gave me two with faded screens. I think I royally messed them up replacing some capacitors. I got a multimeter and new soldering station for the holidays so i'm going to try and tackle it again. I really want to fix it because I have streets of rage and sonic. Make sure you try to get the rechargable packs or an AC adapter. GG took 6 AA and ate them up. My gameboy was way better.
Also, I have a gameboy color... they play original gameboy games, right? I need to pick up some more games. I sold a ton off as a teenager. I only have gta and pokemon red left. I had some good games too, like wario world.

Re: thinking of getting a game gear
Buy an adapter, unless you're a millionaire and can afford 6 AA batteries for 5 hours play on a regular basis. Also, being able to solder will REALLY help, most of them have no sound or blurry screens and need their capacitors replaced. I've heard this is really easy if you can solder though, and pretty cheap to do aswell. I need to do that myself - my screens fine, but I get no sound.mas wrote:I am thinking of picking up a game gear since they are dirt cheap and thanks to nathanbarnatt and especially noiseredux who has given me some feedback on getting into the gameboy, I'm loving the portable generation. Anyhow, as for some must haves:
Shinobi 1 & 2 (aka The GG Shinobi) - Awesome ninja game where you gain new ninjas with new powers after every level. Kinda like revenge of shinobi meets megaman
Wonder Boy 1 & 3 (might be called 'the revenge of drancon' in the US) - just a damn good series in general. Wonder Boy 1 = adventure island, Wonder Boy 3 is akind of Action RPG/platformer mash-up, and is absolutely fantastic
Halley Wars - Good little vertical shmup
Tails Adventure - Interesting, kind of metroidvania-ish action platformer starring tails.
Tails Sky Patrol - Japan only. Hard and short, but fun game where you have to manouvre a flying tails through a tough obstacle course.
GG Aleste/Powerstrike 1 & 2 - It's an Aleste shmup. Therefore, it is great. No idea which regions it was available in
Megaman - Buy this if you're rich
Fantasy Zone - Classic sega shooter series, always worth a recommendation imo. Not the same as the master system version.
Sylvan Tale - good ARPG. Japan only, but it doesn't seem too hard to figure out
Defenders of Oasis - Fun little classic RPG. All regions too.
Crystal Warriors - Kinda like Shining Force or Fire Emblem, nice little SRPG.
Psychic World - Interesting looking little Run n Gun game
Tempo jr - Colourful platformer in the Tempo series. Looks a little slow, but fun
Ax Battler - Giant Zelda II rip-off. Haven't tried it yet, but it might be worth a look.
Streets of Rage 1 & 2
Ecco 1 & 2
Dynamite Headdy - All of these are decent ports of bigger games. I think there might be a Gunstar Heroes Port in japan too, but it might be quite pricy
I heard good stuff about Aerial Assault, but after playing it, I really wouldn't recommend it. The sonic games are hit and miss, mostly miss. Sonic 1,2, chaos and triple trouble get ok reviews, but blast is eh, and the rest are awful. Ironic that the best sonic games on GG star tails. I'm also interested in the GG Lion King game, but thats personally because I loved the Mega Drive version.
I'm also not gonna lie - I've only played a couple of these myself. Most of these are GG games on my wants list. However, I can vouch for Shinobi, Wonder boy 1 & 2, Sonic Chaos and Halley Wars being well worth your time.
If anyone else knows anything good I've missed, add it on. I'd like some more recommendations myself.
Re: thinking of getting a game gear
The AC adapter is pretty easy to come by. On the US Game Gear, it just uses a Genesis model 2 AC adapter. On the Japanese Game Gear, it uses a Mega Drive/Genesis/Master System AC adapter.
Here are the games I have:
Columns- good puzzle game. Get it. It's cheap.
The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck- Fun platformer. Worth getting.
Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion- awesome platformer. Get it.
Ninku- Interesting cute vs. fighter. Worth getting if cheap. Japan only.
Pop Breaker- a puzzle/shooter hybrid. A little like Bangai-o, but not much.
Psychic World- playable platformer. Not the best, but playable.
The GG Shinobi- Amazing. Buy it.
Sonic Drift- fun Mario Kart clone.
Sonic the Hedgehog- awesome. All the Sonic games are.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic The Hedgehog Chaos
Super Monaco GP- pretty fun racer.

Re: thinking of getting a game gear
I've got a game Gear, however it simply won't start up at all, thus I'm going to buy a capacitor pack and fix it when I can be bothered.
I don't have any Game Gear games yet but I was going to get a master system converter for it from here here. Are such converters worth buying, generally speaking?
Speaking of power supplies. Am I right in thinking that the Mega Drive 1 plug works fine with the Game Gear?

I remember Columns kicking my ass when I was a little kid, but I could play Sonic Chaos and Castle of Illusion anytime. BTW I have one that needs battery covers if anyone has a spare set. PM me!Breetai wrote:The AC adapter is pretty easy to come by. On the US Game Gear, it just uses a Genesis model 2 AC adapter. Re: thinking of getting a game gear
I just bought a game gear and I am pretty happy with it. I have ms pacman which is pretty fun. Lion king is also pretty fun. Any of the mortal combat games offer nice portable fighting fun and look good.
I just want to separate the cereal from the mouse mask.

I have Castle of Illusion and Luck Dime Caper on Master System. They're both pretty good.Breetai wrote:The AC adapter is pretty easy to come by. On the US Game Gear, it just uses a Genesis model 2 AC adapter. On the Japanese Game Gear, it uses a Mega Drive/Genesis/Master System AC adapter.

You like Sonic Drift? I've heard nothing but bad things about it, so I wouldn't mind hearing your opinion on it. Columns is a game I generally forget exists. It's OK, but nothing special. I much prefer Puyo Puyo for puzzle games on Sega machines. Mean Bean Machine is on Game Gear too right?
I'd never heard of ninku or pop breaker before, but they don't look like my sort of thing really.
