iPhone 4, iTunes 10, and Mac OS Leopard

Post by vash23n »

Please note, I know this is not video game related so I threw it in the off topic section. Also, I don't want to start a Mac vs. PC war, I just need some advice.

My wife and I recently upgraded to the iPhone 4. The salesman knew what type of computer we had (and how old) and still sold us these things. Long story short, in order to connect the iPhone 4 to iTunes, you need to upgrade to iTunes 10. I have version 9. I go to upgrade and terms out I need Mac OS 10.5.8. I have 10.4.1. Great! So I call and pay another $130 for the newest Mac OS Snow Leopard. The tech guy made me read of my system specs to see if it met the requirements. I do and he says it will work fine. Got it today and I don't have enough RAM. What an A-HOLE! So now I am told I have to upgrade my RAM.

To sum up a shortened long story, my question is if there is anyway around RAM requirements when installing programs or operating systems? Am I stuck completing this intricate ballet of getting screwed over by picking up more RAM (I found it for pretty cheap so it's not TOO big of a deal) or is there some sort of work around? Basically, any way of getting my iPhone 4 to sync with iTunes without upgrading or anyway to update iTunes to the newest version without upgrading the operating system?

What is your opinion of just jailbreaking it? It's been my understanding, after researching it for my own iPhone, that through jailbreak, you can do so much more than Apple wants to allow its unit to do..
However, taking into consideration how much time and money was invested into the tech, I can definitely see the hesitation for something risky.. But after the loops and tricks it sounds like you've gone through just to be able to use the damn thing, I don't think a little bit of research into hacking the thing to do what you want would be totally out of the question..

EDIT: as a side note - when it comes to RAM requirements and operating systems, especially newer ones that support 64-bit, I would do as instructed just to be safe.

Quite a few of my friends have jailbroken their iPhones and the results are pretty cool. Many more features become available, including another app store with a ton more applications. I am a less is more kind of guy, I barely have any apps (I hate this term) as it is. Mainly just use the phone for phone, email, facebook, iPod, and Myst and Riven :). That's what makes this the biggest pain in the ass, I just want to connect the thing to iTunes and fill it with my music and I will be set.

it just sounds fishy that iTunes won't update to the newest version on your computer.. (If you're computer is newer than 2007, I would definitely call somebody and find out why your original OS wasn't good enough..)
To be honest, I'm more of a PC guy than Mac, but this sort of thing is universal - you shouldn't of had to update your hardware for new tech, regardless of a software's newer firmware, and especially if an Apple tech knew your setup and gave you the OK.

I would have returned the phones the minute I found out I needed to shovel out an additional $130, but that's just me..

Sounds like you've supported Apple enough - it's time they supported you!

Yes we have def supported Apple throughout the years and this is honestly the first time we have ever had an issue. Our computer is probably 2005 and 2006. The biggest uproar is that the iPhone 4 was made compatible with Windows XP, but not Apple's own OS from two generations ago. The argument is that XP is still so widely used while only a handful of people are still using this older version of Mac OS. Seems like it would have been a pretty simple thing to do, but that would have taken away $130 a pop for this new Snow Leopard upgrade package that they seem to have put together for no reason.

Call applecare explain that your not pleased that you have to upgrade to leopard and that you are looking to have the device returned. They will give you a free copy of leopard.

Why did you pay $130 for snow leopard? I paid £28 from Amazon for my retail copy of Snow Leopard...

Also, if you just needed 10.5.8, why didn't you just buy Leopard? Problem solved. Issue is with the end user here. Not Apple.

Leopard is not available in stores anymore unless really old stock.

The upgrade disk for snow leopard is cheap but it requires you to have 10.5 first as its an upgrade disk

It does say on the box what it requires to use the device on a mac or windows based PC so apple is not at fault here but apple will assist in resolving the issue if you contact them.

I can understand the support issue - that is pretty shitty to not support your loyal consumer-base.. However, the argument can definitely be made that if you poll 10 random people off the street about what computer they use, 8 or 9 out of 10 will say PC..
Now that I'm finished playing devil's advocate.. Get on the phone and argue you're God-given right to fair business - tell them you feel taken advantage of and demand either a refund, or immediate satisfaction, otherwise you'll tell 10 of your MAC friends to no longer support Apple! (Steve Jobs is so arrogant though, he'll probably believe you actually have 10 friends that use MACs.. )

Listen to these guys - try Leopard!

Maybe it's a Mac OS thing because I'm on XPpro with iTunes 9 and the iPhone4 works just fine.
