old school vs new school?

Post by mas »

Hi everyone,
I have just gotten a ps3 over the Christmas holiday's and I bought some of the best games for it like super sf4, red dead redemption, madden 11, vf5, bioshock2, dead rising 2 and little big planet. I have played these games and besides madden, I'm just not into them. Maybe I'm just too old but I spent all Friday night trying to play some of these games and yes madden is awesome and sf4 is also great graphics but i just hate getting my ass kicked online when it comes to other players and whatever i thought i was good in street fighter but after a while it gets old and i just left my ps3 alone.
Today on the other hand I had nothing to do but put on my dreamcast and i went to town on games like jet grind radio, daytona, marvel vs capcom 2, fatal fury, sonic adventure, nfl 2k2(which i feel is alot better than any madden) and i was playing more games but you get my drift. I had more fun playing the dreamcast and playing my nes and snes than yesterday with the ps3.
I don't know maybe it's me being that I'm in my 30's but I feel that games today aren't as fun as they once were. My kids don't like the nes or snes or even dc because they say the graphics aren't as good. So I always tell them look at the gameplay or they say the games on the nes are way too hard. I just don't understand them. I have no hate for the ps3 at all but i just feel that games today aren't and don't feel as fun as the games from the 80's and 90's even till 2002 when the dreamcast died. I'm just ranting but does anyone else feel the same way? thanks

I totally understand. I have all the current generation consoles, but sometimes I just prefer, like many others here I'm sure, to just go back to basics with some old school gaming. Maybe we just have better memories attached to these older games? Tough to say. I do have a recommendation for you. Pick up 3D Dot Game Heroes for PS3. It's basically a Zelda ripoff. As in NES Zelda. It's great. From Software made it, so it's a reputable team. I'm playing it now. It's so Zelda I can hardly believe they got away with it.

I think many of us feel the same way, but my undying love for gaming keeps me following the game industry in the hopes that I'll find the occasional new title that is as fun as some of the older ones from years ago were.

I think a Nintendo DS would be right up your alley, if you want more games that are old school in nature. Lots of fun stuff like the castlevania games. You should also check out the Playstation store if you want to have more fun with your PS3. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a recent game with an old school feel that I enjoyed and it has a co-op feature, so maybe you can play with your kids. Generally speaking, download only titles cater more to old schoolers these days than major retail releases that you see on store shelves

I know what you mean man, aside from the occasional genre-breaker (Read, Mass Effect, or anything by Valve) I find myself generally disappointed with today's games.

You nailed it man. The PS3 is an amazing system - I've got about 20 of the best games for it too, but you know what I was playing this afternoon? My SNES. Man I love that console.

That's just the way it is. You know your Dreamcast the best because that's what you grew up with and that's what you played with your friends all the time. There's no escaping it.

I say try and keep up with current gen, but acknowledge your one true love. You'r kids won't ever understand because it's a generational thing. Even if you force the old school on them it won't work.

I've got a cousin maybe 5 or 6 years older then me and he swears by the Amiga as being the greatest. He still plays it almost daily, and has no current gen consoles. To each his own I guess.

SNES is the best console, I'll agree with that.

But I'll also point out that, in my opinion, those aren't exactly the 'best games' for PS3.

Metal Gear Solid
Uncharted
3D Dot Game Heroes
Yakuza
MAG
and in particular,
Demon's Souls' level of difficulty will all make you feel a bit younger.

Yet another redundant thread encouraging a battle of what are the best games. I think every console has their own unique great games. Of course everyone has their favorite. No reason to list them out, just enjoy the games you like.

Well, in some instances I do like to read about why people like their games. Either out of curiosity as what their tastes are, or more importantly, to find hidden gems I haven't heard of.

I certainly love the memories I have of classic games and still partake of their fun. However, I think anyone who immediately invalidates a game based on when it was made would be doing themselves a great disservice. I think many old gaming ways are endearing enough to last forever, but I am prone to getting tired of playing something over and over. Even my favorite game. Of course, this applies for when someone says a game can't be good because it's "too old" Rage boil.

I always like to remember something to keep my moral compass straight: the worst game I ever played was made for the NES.

OP no offense (really! just being friendly), but when I hear someone have a testament like yours my response is: "You've simply forgotten how to practice something new. You're complacent in the things you're already established at." There is no way you can say MVC2 is a more enjoyable experience than SF4. Sorry, but nah man. MVC2 isn't even a good experience compared to MVC1.

Now dont get me wrong I like sf4 alot myself but I perfer the tag battle games because there is soo much action going on the screen thats all. But I will try a couple titles recommended like that zelda clone. The other thing is I have a gba sp with the backlit screen and i love it and now i'm even getting into the gameboy and gbc era that I missed when I was a kid. What a shame on me I should have ask my parents for one.
