PS3 Slim Louder than My Dreamcast!

I always thought the Dreamcast was a loud disc-reader, but holy hell, my new PS3 slim grinds away like nobody's business. It doesn't sound like it's doing any damage, just makes a lot of noise when it reads only Black Ops for some reason.

Is this a PS3 slim thing? My friend's fat PS3 doesn't do anything like this. My PS3 will read the disc through entire matches on Black Ops. I hope this game isn't wearing down my drive's life.

I just got a PS3 Slim for Christmas. I do hear it reading the disc on some games but mine certainly isn't as loud as my Dreamcast. I can hear my Dreamcast from across the room!

My PS3 Slim is so quiet, you can't even tell it's on. My Xbox and Xbox 360 on the other hand, are insanely loud! Never noticed how loud the Dreamcast is.

if you bought it recently you might want to exchange it. both my phat and slim are really quiet.

Not during gameplay but sometimes when I power on the system, my PS3 would get crazy-loud and vibrate the damn entertainment center; followed by the roof rattling. OK, so it's not that severe but it does get a little loud for some odd reason.

Ive noticed how loud the ps3 slim's laser is depends on the game youre trying to play. I cant remember which game, but i remember one in particular sounded AWFUL while being read. Mind you, I sit pretty close to the tv but yeah, even on that problem game, nowhere near the loudness of my dreamcast. My dreamcast scares the shit outta me everytime I use it with fears of disc drive failure (even have a few set aside just in case that very thing occurs). It sounds like someone beltsanding a bathtub.

If anyones PS3 fan is insanely loud, you need to pull it out of your entertainment unit and let it breathe. It only gets that loud when it is damn near overheating.

My original 120 slim was a little louder than I expected it to be. I got a 160 recently and the thing is much quieter.

It actually could be that particular copy of Black Ops. I bought MKvsDC for the 360 a year ago and my 360 made a loud grinding sound (like it was eating it) as soon as I put the disc in, and it continued throughout load screens as well as during matches which was the most annoying.

After testing other games, I was relieved to find out that it was only just this game disc and not my 360.

You may be having a similar problem with your Black Ops disc. It could have been pressed wrong or something *shrug*

Yeah, I have some older audio CDs that have horrible balance. When played at normal old 1x speed in a drive or a car stereo that probably reads at 2-4X to read ahead for skip protection they're fine but put them in a 12x or faster drive and it sounds like a jet preparing to takeoff. I had one I tried to listen to in a lab PC at school and the desk was vibrating it was so bad. Everyone in the lab turned around to see what the hell was going on. I have 2 copies of Raiden Fighters Aces and one is pretty bad compared to the other as well so it can certainly be sloppy manufacturing on newer stuff too.
