^Exactly. Everyone and their mother had a Spectrum or Commodore around here.

I think that there's no lack of creativity in the industry right now and games as niche as Mr Driller still get released.

The blockbuster mentality of Activision and friends has not reduced the market for creative games. I would even say that there are many more chances for weird games to be made (See, the promotion behind Elite Beat Agents or Phoenix Wright and the indie sales)

I think a lot of modern games are creative, particularly in the indie scene. Nevertheless, a game with a multi-million dollar budget (like Gabriel Knight 2 had) does not seem likely, in this day and age, to end up with lengthy segments of the game devoted to researching Bavarian history.

I suppose something like that might happen in an indie scene or some academic student project. There was this recent example of recreated civil rights struggles of the 50s and 60s created in Second Life. I just don't see any big budget developers taking some of the same kinds of risks that they did in the past.

The only game... the only type of game I could see languishing indefinitely is interactive fiction. And even then, with e-book readers becoming so affordable and compelling, they may see a popular resurgence. Probably not. But you never know.

But smart titles are bound to appear and maybe some of them will be fairly mainstream. The beautiful thing about the internet, is that fringe interests can find an audience large enough to become self-sustaining. I suspect, one day, there will be a game to challenge the player, by forcing that player to learn about the subject of the game. Will it sell as well as Call of Duty? Maybe, but the demographic will be completely different.

I'm optimistic. About this, at least.

A company like Paradox continues to pump out highly detailed and thoughtful strategy games for a small but interested audience. So, why not?

Conker's Bad Fur Day - In fact, even when it was originally made no one had the balls to copy such a game. Went against everything an anthropomorphic platformer was suppossed to be so it didn't really fit it back then. Today, it would not be seen as that offensive, but there's really no market for anthropormorphic platformers in general now

Shenmue - Critics would shit all over it were it released today I think. I think it came out at the right time

The Sims and Sim City wouldn't have gotten far had they been invented now and not years ago.

it seems a small comeback is being made. but, a simple platformer. start at point A and get to B without the bullshit. nothing more, nothing less.

i hate how all these modern games have these elaborate stories and long lengths. am i the only one that likes a short game? fuck those 30+ hour long games with their stupid ass stories.

you won't be seeing physical copies of a short game, for example ghouls n ghosts, being sold in stores anymore. on xbla, psn, and wii thingy, but not in stores.
if you took a shit, please put it back

The actual quote was "What? A game you can't beat?".

The Sims could probably be sold be better now, with "social gaming" and that stuff.

Infocom Text Only Adventures, well not as a store shelf release anymore.

Oh, and all that huge cool packaging, doubt we will see that again.

Also all the big tri-fold shelf space robbing beautiful packages in the era of Eco Cases.
