I'm 90% sure that he is referred to a "Ganondorf" in-game. I believe the exact quote from Zelda is:

"Ganondorf... no. Ganon, the king of DARKNESS!"

He starts off as human Ganondorf and then becomes the pig-beast Ganon when the dark world opens up, IIRC.

I never saw the Player's Guide, so that could be in it. But in game he is not called Gannondorf. It's Anaghaim when he was in human form.

Ah, someone uploaded a transcript of the game. Here's the part I'm talking about:

"Link, thanks to you, I was
able to escape from the
clutches of evil. Thank you!
...The Triforce will grant the
wishes of whoever touches it,
as long as that person lives...
That is why it was hidden in
the Golden Land. Only a select
few were told of its location,
but at some point that
knowledge was lost...
The one who rediscovered
the Golden Land was
an evil thief named Ganondorf.
Luckily, he couldn't figure out
how to return to the Light
World...
...Well, remember that you
have magical powers, which only
the Hero can make use of!
There are some other magical
warping points like the one you
saw on Death Mountain.
By using them you can go
between the two worlds and
find the evils hidden in the
Dark World. You are the only
one who can destroy
Ganondorf, the thief... No!
Ganon, the evil King of
Darkness!"

As I recall, Ganondorf was the thief who was trapped in the dark world and became Ganon. Agahnim was, I guess, some sort of puppet or something of his in the light world that he used to open up the passage between the two worlds.

So Gannondorf is in the game. I remember all that after reading it.

Wow, that's a lot earlier than I remember that name being used! Nice find!

Slightly related, the idea of there being multiple Links and multiple Zeldas goes back earlier than a lot of people are aware. In the Japanese version of Zelda II's story, it's supposed to be a different princess Zelda that's sleeping under the spell, not the same one that Link rescues in the first game. I imagine this made no sense at all to some poor translator, so it was "corrected" for our release of the game... but I don't think there's ever been an official comment on why the story was changed.

2cents: Aganhim is the name of the wizard he possesses in Link to the Past to give him a mortal body in the Light World.

That or it's just a puppet body. I forget. But yeah different from Ganondorf.
