I know I've said this before, but the smart thing to do would be to wait to hack the PS3 until the PS4 comes along, or some other sign comes along that shows that the PS3 is no longer Sony's top priority. I haven't heard anything lately about PS2, Gamecube or original Xbox hackers getting into any heat.

I doubt people are willing to wait for Sony's next game console. Besides, it seems with these hackers it's matters of pride cracking a current-gen system, and then humbly leaking snippets of code online.the7k wrote:I know I've said this before, but the smart thing to do would be to wait to hack the PS3 until the PS4 comes along, or some other sign comes along that shows that the PS3 is no longer Sony's top priority. Re: Geohot: guilty or not guilty?
Comparing jailbreaking a phone and "hacking" a game console are two completely different things. A phone is not a "closed" system whereas a video game console is. Thus, video games will not be exempt via the same ruling that jailbreaking a phone was allowed.
As for the verdict, I will imagine that Sony will have MUCH better lawyers than geohot can scrum up, so he will probably be ruled guilty. I also think that a jury will not understand the difference in what geohot did, and the global term of "hacker", which has a pronounced negative connotation in the public. Thus, I give geohot a ~5% chance of a ruling in his favor.

Re: Geohot: guilty or not guilty?
Is pirating games wrong? Yeah probably. Is running any code you want on your computer system wrong? No it isn't.
It's like being forced to only cook one brand of food in your oven. It's my oven and I can do whatever I want with it, not what the manufacturer wants to.
The gaming industry must find better ideas to combat piracy, because everything will be cracked one way or the other.
So I believe Geohot is not guilty. If only the jury is picked from Racketboy members

Um... the iPhone very much is a closed system. There wouldn't be a need for a jailbreak if it was open... If a phone requires jailbreaking to run your own code on it. Guess what? It's a closed system... That's the whole point of jailbreaking.enderfall wrote:Comparing jailbreaking a phone and "hacking" a game console are two completely different things. I think people should wait for the PS4 to come out, before they hack the PS3. Or wait until the PS3 isn't officially supported anymore.
When you hack a current system, not only do you run the risk of getting sued but there is a very good chance that new firmware updates will cancel out your work, and potentially cause other problems like removing features, or bricking consoles that were never hacked.
Thanks to this fucker, I can't access PSN or buy PS3 games anymore.
I recently bought an Everdrive flash cart for the Mega Drive. It came out fairly recently, and since the Mega Drive is no longer supported, no harm will come from it. As much as I hate Sony, I still don't think it's right to hack their current system and open the floodgates to piracy like this. There are many people who normally buy PS3 games that will suddenly change to downloading ISOs because of this.
If geohot was hacking the PS3 5 years from now, I would be all for it. But doing it now is just creating all sorts of harm for many different people and companies, including himself.

Re: Geohot: guilty or not guilty?
I was referring to jailbreaking it to use it on a network other than AT&T (in the U.S.), not running your own code on it. Pretty sure that's what the law allows you to do. I could be wrong because I don't have a smartphone at all and could care less about the iphone and their $150/month service plans.Niode wrote:Um... the iPhone very much is a closed system. Re: Geohot: guilty or not guilty?
Geohot made it possible for people to load their own programs on the ps3, his exploit explicitly did not make it possible to play downloaded games, just to sign and run code. Other people made games to run on it.
Anyway this is a complete waste of time and money for Sony, yeah they might scare a handful of easily scared people but that's it. The information is out and the way I see it jumping to litigation is Sony admitting they can't stop it with software. There's really nothing for them to gain from this and it's only going to damage their reputation and encourage more people to hack the PS3.
