Well I think the lesson was learned. It's not like you see this happening very often today. They didn't know to avoid changes back then because they didn't know what the future would hold. They do now.

Robotnik is still cooler than Eggman.

I think a lot of localizers would still make tons of unnecessary changes today if it wasn't for two things:

1) More story detail in the original game content makes it much more difficult to actually make large changes.

2) The Internet means that the audience is no longer blind to any tinkering that happens to their games, anime, etc.

It's just no longer practical to screw around with the stories and characters anymore.

Robotnik is still cooler than Eggman.
Whether that's so or not, I think Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is a very effective way to deal with the issue.

Yes, it was a very simple way to make it so both are the "correct" interpretation.

Did they ever mention the name Robotnik after Sonic Adventure though? It seems like as soon as Eggman was mentioned they used it as a way to phase out Robotnik for good.

Not that I'm complaining, I just haven't played all of the newer Sonic games and I'm curious.

Sonic Adventure 2 makes a lot of use of the "Robotnik" name, specifically in reference to Eggman's proposed "Robotnik Empire" and to his grandfather Gerald Robotnik. As far as I know, that game also introduced the Robotnik name into official use in Japan.

Dr. Robotnik. That's what they said in the Genesis games (at least the U.S. ones) and that's what Sonic called him in the Saturday morning cartoon on ABC.

I had a problem when King Koopa started getting called Bowser starting with Super Mario Bros. 3. And I had a problem when Gannon started being called Gannondorf. I'm just an old-foggie stuck in my ways, I guess.

The NES instruction manual for the original Super Mario Bros. labeled his ass-ugly sprite as "BOWSER, KING OF THE KOOPA" but the name was largely ignored by the cartoons and comics until Super Mario Bros. 3 came out. That doesn't make the name anything new, though.

I don't have an issue with this, because of how it was presented in the story in the LttP players guide. There was a thief named Gannondorf, and when he got the Triforce it mutated him thanks to his dark desires and he became the pig-man Ganon. And they carried that out in OoT and have kept it consistent through all the games.

I was about to say that Ganon is the monstrous pig form and ganondorf is the man, but you beat me to it.

And with Bowser, King Koopa seems to be a name that is also correct anyway. He is Bowser, King of the Koopas after all.

In fact, I'm surprised people are annoyed with Bowser, I thought that Peach would irritate more people. Then again, Princess Peach Toadstool could quite easily be her name, so again its no big deal. All these names work fine together.

My special folder is still labeled Toadstool, because that's how I think of her. Bowser was always referred to as Bowser, he just also had a title of King Koopa, and it was up to the individual game which one they preferred. So I'm good with that one.
