Geohot: guilty or not guilty?

Post by ieatramen »

So Geohot is being sued by Sony for "jailbreaking" the PS3, etc. Do you think this guy is guilty? I'm curious what the community's thoughts are regarding this. I'm not sure what to think either way. I mean he did open the gateway for piracy on the ps3, but apparently jailbreaking an iphone or rooting an android has been ruled a-okay by the courts already.

Is he guilty of breaking the anti-circumvention clause of the DMCA? Yes, probably. Has he done anything morally wrong? No. Will a judge find in Sony's favor? Probably.

Jailbreaking cell phones has been explicitly granted an exemption to the DMCA by the Librarian of Congress. There is no exemption for video games. Also, there is no exemption in the DMCA for non-infringing uses.

Not guilty. Once you buy something, you should be able to do anything you want with it. Short of harming and killing people with it.

Good to see morals are alive and well. GUILTY. Hackers are pathetic losers who THINK they are special, but in reality they are not. Pay for your games like everyone else you cheap bastards. How do you think a hacker would feel if someone raided their stuff? Do you think they would cry foul?

Well actually he didn't open the gateway for piracy. If you actually look into it. Nobody has officially opened the gateway to piracy since the PSJailbreak team. The custom firmwares that kakaroto and geohot produced simply allow the installation of package files. They still need to be signed to work. Now it's Sony's complete failure to use proper encryption methods that has allowed piracy. There is absolutely zero circumvention of copy protection going on here. There is no 'hack'. I don't think people really understand how much of a monumental failure this is security wise. Is the law on your side when you go out and leave your door wide open and criminals steal all your shit? No, you can't claim on your insurance you can't do anything. Rather than leave the doors wide open, what Sony did was leave a message on the back door saying "pssst, the key is under the mat at the front door, don't tell anybody".

But didn't he release the information to the public? I'm not really sure about this topic, so I may be wrong most likely. He can do what he wants with his PS3, but he released the information to the public, that's why he's in trouble right?

There was this guy in class who came in one day all kinds of piss. He was bitching and moaning that police raided his place; taking all his computers and the like. Funny thing is, the week before he was saying things like "I laugh at those who pay for their shit, haha." I felt no remorse for the guy.
