Is Gamestop Evil? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Re: Gamestop is evil
Just out of curiosity, what were some of the games (if you remember) that got you the credit? I've pre-ordered quite a few games and never once got a credit. Unless, I did and just don't know about it.
Re: Gamestop is evil
The only one I'm sure of was Mario Galaxy 2. If I recall right it tends to be the higher profile releases to get people go to for Amazon over one of the other retailers.

Well, they once did sell retro stuff. Most Gamestops, in Northern California at least, were there when they did sell retro stuff. However, I SO wish they would sell retro stuff again.
As for buying new games, and newer pre-owned games they're awesome. They're always having buy 2 get 1 free sales, PS2 games are dirt-freaking cheap, and I get 10% off extra for being an Edge Card holder.
When it comes to selling/trading games there, forget it. It's highway robbery. Unless the game came out last week for $60, then your lucky if you get $5 for a game. Anyone that actually does do this, are complete morons. But I'm glad there are morons out there because that means I get their games for cheap.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - $20 creditZiggy587 wrote:Just out of curiosity, what were some of the games (if you remember) that got you the credit? I've pre-ordered quite a few games and never once got a credit. Unless, I did and just don't know about it.
Madden 11 - $20 credit
Super Street Fighter 4 - $10 credit
Here's what's coming up: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/sho ... p?t=238099
I also got a bunch of Kmart promo credit deals last year with new releases - also in th4 $10-$25 range. Off the top of my head:
Metroid: Other M - $20
Halo Reach - $25
God of War Ghost of Sparta - $10
NBA 2K11 - $20
I think there were one or two others I forgot. Kmart is a great place to buy new releases because they often have deals where if you buy a new release, in addition to the coupon you can buy another recent game for $20 or so. CAG thread for that: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/sho ... p?t=277909. (Looks like I'll be picking up LBP2. MvC3, and Dead Space 2 at Kmart, as Amazon has nothing going on
So anyway, if you look around just a little bit there's usually some good deals to be had on release day or release week. I know that after the credit, these games were all cheaper at release then they would be for many months to come.
Re: Gamestop is evil
Gamestop is ok, but what sucks is in my local place we have nothing but GS and nothing more. We use to have a retro store that sold everything but they went out of busniess because of them
Playstation 2; Playstation 3; Super Nintendo(mini); 3xGenesis; Sega CD; 2x3DO; XBOX; XBOX360; Wii; 2xNintendo(one top loader); Gameboy Color; GBA; Nintendo DS; PSP; Gamecube; 5xDreamcast(4 American, 1 Japanese); 2xSaturn(1 American, 1 Japanese); Nintendo 64; PC

I love going to gamestops in the ghetto and getting rare games for cheap. I wish that they still sold retro games, but they don't have the space in any store that I've ever been in, even the one in Korea Town in Manhattan, which is two floors. It's not as profitable and they just don't have the space. It would be cool if Gamestop would open up a small line of stores that sells just retro stuff, but I don't know how long that would last.

Re: Gamestop is evil
I personally hate Gamestop. I went there when Star Wars Obi Wan came out and bought the game "new". i brought the empty case to the counter and the employee carelessly pulled my disc out of a drawer, pulled it out of a paper sleeve, and slammed it into my case. I brought it home and seen that my "new" game had smudges and scratches on it. Part of the experience of buying a new game is being the first to open it, an experience you do not get with gamestop. I never went back to Gamestop ever again after that. The only way games here are new is that you are the first to play it, but a new game should not be damaged.

This is true. I find that the Gamestops located in bad parts of town tend to have good finds more often than the ones in better neighborhoods.soul_hacker wrote:I love going to gamestops in the ghetto and getting rare games for cheap.
Sometimes, some amusing stuff happens in ghetto Gamestops too. Once the people in front of me attempted to trade in a stack of Xbox 360 games. The clerk had to spend like 10 minutes explaining to them that trade-ins are not done on a one-to-one basis. Essentially, these people thought that because they brought in a stack of seven used games to trade in, they should be entitled to seven new games.

Game Attack in Highland Village TX has about a GameStop worth of current and previous gen systems, and shelves full of Dreamcast, Saturn, N64, PS1, SNES, Genesis, and NES games and accessories, and a section for DVD movies. One floor, in a small store, and they manage it with space left over. The entire GameXChange chain does the same thing. GameStop just uses their space inefficiently and isn't interested in used games they can't resell for $40.soul_hacker wrote:I wish that they still sold retro games, but they don't have the space in any store that I've ever been in, even the one in Korea Town in Manhattan, which is two floors.
