A few comments:

Any phone number can be ported to a new carrier. I've done this multiple times for cell phones and house phones (VOIP). This is called Local Number Portability.

Phones that you get from your provider are not free. They're $200-$600. They need to lock you in a plan at a high rate for a certain time period to pay for the phone.

I would prefer if they separated out the phone from the plan so that you can buy it separately. If I were to keep my phone for 5+ years, there's no reason why I should be subsidizing someone getting a phone every 1-2 years.

Personally, I have a TracPhone. The quality is very good but the phone sucks. It's very basic. I wouldn't mind paying $200 for a good phone but that option doesn't exist.

@noise - the virgin plan doesn't seem too bad. $25/month I could live with.
