ugh, the TV didn't have the original remote. Thats a big deal to me, that and the fact that that effectively I'd be trading a 32 in 4:3 area for a 27in 4:3 area, just to display a handful of games in Widescreen. I feel that since widescreen TV have many stretch options the original remote is essential.

I drive a Hyundai Accent 2 door.
Audi A4 here. My wife drives a Civic though :)

I know all to well the pains of treating a car like a truck. I've had the pleasure of toting a 32" Wega HD CRT (among other things) in my backseat. It slid in fairly well, but getting it out was another story. A beanbag, a large flattened heavy duty corrugated box, blood sweat and tears, and a few swear words were involved. Let's just say that door needs a little extra ooomph now to close properly

Did you get the model number for the TV? If so call Magnavox or go to their online parts department and see if they still have a remote in stock.

You wouldn't get all the nice remote specific features, or at least you'd have to menu dive for them all which can get annoying.

Replacements are pretty easy to find on ebay. Usually around $6 used, $15 new + S&H. You might needed to find the manual for the TVs or search the manufacturer's website to get the correct replacement model's serial number. I recently replaced all the universals in my house with originals and it was a lot cheaper than I thought it would be.

I know! I have 5 crappy universal remotes in a box downstairs. Mostly older GE brands. I can give you a good deal on one.

Seriously tho, I hear the Logitech Harmony series of universal remotes are very good and will do everything the originals are capable of. Older models of the Harmony series can be gotten pretty cheaply off Ebay too ~$50 when I looked into it. I almost went that route since I couldn't find any complaints from reviews. The 500-700 line still do everything the newer ones do, they just don't have the color LCDs the new models have.

I got my Gottlieb pinball machine in an old school Rav4. Plenty of milimeters to spare.

I smell a new thread approaching :)

The perfect retro gaming TV has RGB (scart) inputs. Get one out of Europe or something!
or better yet a normal security or video production low res monitor second hand on craigslist.

 RGB, in the US!?

Security monitors over here are almost all black and white, or have only coax/rf input unfortunately. Also, the raw costs of importing something as heavy as a TV that he can hardly use for anything is quite steep.
