Top Ten+ Multi-Player FPS's for N64

Post by DeadEyeAce »

I'd like to submit this Top Ten(Plus) list as an artical for publication on the Racketboy site.
If some one has something to add I would be happy for the feedback.
Or even to expand on the entrees that are a little thin.

The Top 10+ Best Multi-Player FPS Games For The N64

Perfect Dark – Number 1 - Number One With A Bullet
This is the King of Multi-Player. There are so many options, it's almost overwhelming. This game is of course the unofficial sequel to GoldenEye. This is a case where they take a good game and made it better. You have a weapon selection whose alumni frequently top Best Of weapon lists. The only weapon that scores higher is the Cerebral Bore of the Turok Franchise. The levels are well thought out. And you even have some returning favours from GoldenEye. But this game had one thing GoldenEye didn't, that's bots. There is even customization here, with different bot difficulty levels, and personality to mix and match. You can even go co-op with the bots and give them orders.

GoldenEye – Number 2 - A Classic That's Second To One
This is the one that started it all. People were buying N64's just to play this game. The single player was actually good, which just added to the excellent multi-player. Looking back the game does have some flaws. One thing that's missing is the inclusion of bot. But if you have enough friends that's not a problem. All in all though it has a few wrinklies, it's still pretty spire for it's age

Turok: Rage Wars – Number 3 – Raging War For Your Thumbs
I know it may be sacrilege but this game is almost better than GoldenEye. The depth is unbelievable, there are so many levels. There are bots. There are even medals and stuff to earn, a trend that has really taken off these days. This game had it all even the Rapter as a playable character, my favourite btw. The cerebral bore is a little limited compared to Turok 2, but there are still some good weapons. But of course this game is a good Multi-player game that's what it is designed to be. And although there is no real story mode, this game is even fun on single player. Which is just a training mode so you can practise for the 4 player frag fests with your friends. The only thing that keeps this game from being perfect is a slit glitch in the co-op mode.

The Wold Is Not Enough – Number 4 – The Illegitimate Son Of A Prince
This is actually quite fun. Although it could have been better, because some of the game dynamics where gimped, like not being able to mix and match the good guys and the bad. This game does have bots, but they cheat in a way to make them totally unlike playing a human. And the allusion of playing against a human is what all A.I. Should aim for. For example the bots have an uncanny ability to get head shoots from across the level. When the distance from from two players should effect the accuracy. One thing you can do is select bots with defects to compensate in order to make playing with bots bearable. One thing of note the sticky bombs are insanely powerful, there like a tactical nuke.

Duke Nukem: Zero Hour – Number 5 – A Hero In His Finest Hour
The Multi-Player in this game is small, but what there is is well developed and polished. The weapons in the levels all excellent. There are even secret stuff like the mega weapon, usually hidden in each level. The characters are cool with different era dukes available.

Quake II – Number 6 – Not Exactly Quaking In Your Boots
This game is fun and all, there is just better on the system.

Duke Nukem 64 – Number 7 - A Port Of Fun
This game does have bots, but if you have more than one, they end up fighting them each other. This can be fun there is quite a bit of depth to the multi-player, but there is just better out there. The one thing that really holds this game back is the 3d engine, not the best out there.

Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M. - Number 8 - The Lack Of Love For This Game, Bugs Me.
This is actually pretty good, although the co-op is more fun than the multi-player.

Turok 2: Seeds Of Evil – Number 9 – It's Evil How Much Fun You'll Have
The multi-player in this is pretty small, but it left your mouth watering for more. And it has not aged well. At the time it was incredible, but it was small and undeveloped. After playing this game Turok: Rage Wars was a must have. All the problems of this multi-player were fixed in Rage Wars

Turok 3: Shadow Of Oblivion – Number 10 – Too Little To Late
The multi-player was alright, but it did not have the depth of Rage Wars, or the freshness of Seeds Of Evil. Plus it came out late in the N64's life span, when there was far better fare on the system. Couple that with a gimmicky and disappointing story mode. This game is realy only for Turok fans

Hexen – Number 11 – A Game That Seemed To Be Hexed From The Start
The game it self is a niche game at best. You can have 4 player co-op. But after one play though, and a play though can go fast with 4 players, it gets old fast. And the same can be said about the multi-player it can be fun but it gets old fast. The deathmatch is not designed for multi-player it's just an addon so the depth and replay value is limited. All in all after one evening of this game you will have fun, but you'll also be dune with the game

Daikatana – Number 12 – Only A Game For Rubberneckers
Vary limited the smallest selection of multi-player scope compared to any of the other games on the list. The levels, what there are, are well designed. The weapons are nice. I actually don't think this game is as bad as people make it out to be. It just suffers from too many poor design desicens. This is maybe a two nigher, and then you will get bored

Jet Force Gemini – Number 13 – AKA Kiddy Force
Although not a First Person Shooter, I still include this game on the list although made by Rare it is not as good as GoldenEye, at least as far as the Multi-Player is concerned. It plays like a demo or mini game selection. It can be fun, but it's limited.

Quake – Number 14 – A Two Point O On The Richter Scale
Only two player, so it gets old fast. Plus not a lot of stuff, like levels, and game types.

Army Men: Sarge's Heroes – Number 15 - A Good Idea In Theory
The war theme and the toy aspect make this game fun at first, but that euphoria wares off fast. First off this game should have been a True First Person Shooter, as moving and aiming is a game of frustration. And forget about close combat, it's all most funny if it weren't so sad. Plus the Multi-Player is vary shallow.

Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2 – Number 16 - Who's Playing These Games
Not much has changed, except for the controls, which is kinda weird.

South Park – Number 17 – Worst FPS EVER!
Interesting Weapons, cool theme, but ultimately a disappointment. First off there is no character balance. You can play as a speck of dust vs a house. How unfair is that. This is just a poorly made game.
Rainbow 6 – Honourable Mention – A Rainbow Of Posibilitys
This game does have Co-Op which is a lot of fun. If only the added on multi-player

Winback – Dishonourable Mention – I Want My Money Back
This Game suffers from horrible controls, plus it's not really an FPS. Not too, too bad. Interesting consept, but it falls into the same category as Army Men.

That's a good list but I'm not sure if top 10's are what the site is about. You'd probably want to PM Ack or Racketboy himself to check and see.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

yeah, that's more a gamefaqs thing.

I respect your opinion, but I dont think any FPS games are playable on the N64. With only one stick only Doom like games work. Doom 64 is a great FPS on the system, but I personally don't think Goldeneye has aged well and Perfect Dark especially suffers with horrid framerate issues.

Setting aside that I don't think that ranking games without any kind of objective criteria is a good idea, I'm sorry but I don't think your article is good enough.

The main reason is that you make many subjective claims without any reasoning to back them up, for example "The levels are well thought out" but then you never say why they are well thought out. You also claim that the weapons are good but we don't know why.

You should explain to me why it's good not just if it's good or bad.

Actually, we have an article covering FPS on the Nintendo 64...

http://www.racketboy.com/retro/nintendo ... brary.html

Granted, our article was to cover as many of the N64's FPS games as possible, not to give a review of our thoughts on quality. Though articles are usually arranged in accordance to our opinions on game quality, we try not to advertise that too much, if only because inevitably we'll end up bashing someone's favorite game from childhood. And I just don't want to do that. Everybody's got an opinion, and they're usually quite different from other folks'. Plus, we might actually really enjoy a horrible game from time to time.

That said, if you're interested in doing articles for the site, let us know. We're always happy to have new additions to the website's community.

maybe I could rework it more into a reference or comparison article, then a top ten.
Thank for the input anyways.

Jet Force Gemini's music was superb! That should at least get a mention in its mini review.
