I can confirm the PS2 cases story. It is now Gamestop policy to throw away complete cases of PS2 games that are under $5 in value. Once the case is tossed, the CD is to be placed in one of those paper yellow CD envelopes and stored with the rest of the loose PS2 games, usually by the register. I confirmed this with a conversation with a manager at a local Gamestop. I'm quite pissed about it.
I went to about 7 different Gamestop locations this weekend and only found 1-2 games worth buying. I had intended to buy around 10 games, had they HAD the cases. I saved a copy of Outrun 2006 because I saw the case literally in the trash can behind the register with about 30 other trashed cases and asked about it. I grabbed the case and went through the loose stack of paper sleeves of PS2 games and found it.
If you'd like to see what's on the death list, look through Gamestop's website for games around the $5 mark or lower and expect them to be loose and trashed, per company policy. I really wanted to relive Max Payne 1 and 2, Oni, Onimusha 3, Syphon Filter, Freedom Fighters, Ace Combat, Red Faction, Neo Contra, Megaman X7, Robotech, and so on. But they've made that impossible now.
Get out there! Collect PS2 games before they're all destroyed.
Yeah. Gamestop employees get treated like shit enough as is. They are just trying to work. If opened copies of new games bother you just go across the street to Walmart.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

some workers cant help it and theres not much we can do anyways.
4chan jokes aside, I'd be mad if I couldn't return an UNOPENED new game.
