This has to be the most idiotic argument I've been in yet:
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/sh ... pics;title
These people are actually for blowing into a cartridge if it isn't working. I really don't know how to respond to this. I know for a fact that after cleaning a system and its games that I have virtually no trouble booting up a cartridge. I don't have to spend three minutes taking out a cart, blowing on it, reinserting the cart, repeat...
I mean... Ugh. I'm really at a loss for words. I've made some very basic outlines for cartridge maintenance and they... they actually disagree?! It's like if someone breaks a leg and you tell them to stay off of it as much as possible and they say shout back: "No! I'm going jogging!" (Sorry; that's the best analogy I have right now...)
Anyway... I think I'm pretty much done there. It isn't even that argument that gets me. It's the entire site that has problems. It's nothing but a bunch of people shouting their opinions hoping they shout louder than the person before. Also, the retro following over there is almost nonexistent. I mean when somebody asks something like: "What is the best ps1 game?" You naturally get about 24 people to say FFVII, which I don't have anything wrong with; if you like the game more power to you. But that isn't the problem... the problem is that these topics turn into arguments over something as dumb as Cloud's hair style and last for at least 4 pages. How on earth can these people argue over something so unimportant???
Conversely, you ask "what are the best ps1 games" over here and you get actual diversity in game choices, good discussion, and an overall positive attitude towards treating each other with respect regardless of our personal choices.
To keep this short: Gamespot sucks (for me... Don't know how you feel personally). You guys and gals rock for keeping the retro community alive. This site is awesome.
I'm done with Gamespot...
Re: I'm done with Gamespot...
Yeah, that was pretty idiotic.
Re: I'm done with Gamespot...
Heh, welcome to the club, my friend. I quit using GameSpot around the age of 17. It just felt too juvenile. I definitely agree with your Retro Gaming comment. Ask about anything other than (S)NES, GB, or maybe Genesis and you'll have everyone going "d00d wat is thaaat?".

To be dead serious, I don't think they would recognize anything Sega related.GSZX1337 wrote:[...]or maybe Genesis and you'll have everyone going "d00d wat is thaaat?".
Xbox on the other hand...
Re: I'm done with Gamespot...
I stopped after the "Kane & Lynch v. Jeff Gerstmann" incident. Don't even like Gerstmann, but the reasons behind his firing was beyond unethical.
As for the 'dude, what's that?' thing: I remember talking to some MW fanboy, saying I personally didn't think it held a candle to Counter-Strike.
"What's Counter-Strike?"
Sigh.

Nuh uh! Blowing in the NES cart totally works! I've tried it, so I know!
Seriously though, I hate it, and I mean HATE it when people disregard a perfectly logical explaination. You take the time to paint a pretty picture that they could understand if they look at it, but they refuse to humor it at all.
Remember dsheinem's topic 'What are you most snobbish about? sorta goes with my reasoning as to why I hate these types of arguments:
"Mac books cost most because they are more high tech"
"I only use Monster cables for my system, everything else to clearly inferior"
"I need Lossless audio, because 256kbit/s sounds like trash, I can tell the difference with my stock iPod headphones BTW"
Every point has a logical explaination, but they insist that they are right as they plug their ears and sing LALALA. Then again, these are the people who kick their tires or hit their TV to get said machines working again
P.S. FFVII is TOTALLY the best PS1 game, I know cuz bought it

If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

I left that site for the same reason and never looked back. In hindsight, it was probably a good move for the time as the site went completely downhill from there.the7k wrote:I stopped after the "Kane & Lynch v. Jeff Gerstmann" incident. Re: I'm done with Gamespot...
To be fair, the poster who was advising against blowing on cartridges should have specified the reasons why blowing on cartridges could be harmful in the long run (e.g. accumulated acidic sputum/moisture or something, just spreading out dust instead of getting them out, wetting the dust and making them turn into mud.)

Meh, going to a mainstream gaming forum to ask for tech advice is almost always going to end badly. It's like going to the official Playstation forums and asking how to fix your PS3. "I don't know...send it to Sony. You really shouldn't mess with it, just send it in."Opa Opa wrote:This has to be the most idiotic argument I've been in yet:

The basic problem is that most people simply aren't technical enough to troubleshoot any further than "Have you tried blowing in it?"
I think you've just been spoiled here at Racketboy, where there ARE actually people that troubleshoot a problem and are not, for a lack of a less condensing phrase, technically ignorant.
HOWEVER, what you stated wasn't entirely accurate, as blowing on carts WILL get them to play (albeit temporarily.) This works NOT because you made better contact with the system by reinserting it, but because the moisture actually increases the conductivity between the pins, getting it to play. You were right on the fact that this degrades the pins on both the cart and the system by means of corrosion over time.
The reason no one believed you was that you denied that the blow method worked at all. To Gamespot forum members, it's like you went into their church and denied their god ever existed.
