Well, now you do have an idea.

Niode wrote:We now have a method of booting games without the need of a backup manager as well. You basically unpack the ELF from the SELF, hexedit the elf to change dev_bdvd to dev_hdd0 then sign the elf, package it as a PSN title and copy it to your HDD. It will run from your game menu as a PSN title, no backup manager needed.

Can this work for PS2 games as well?

Also, a firmware patch was just released for 3.55 CFW that allows LV.2 Peek and Poke syscalls, so a new backup manager should be appearing shortly!

I hear that the emulator is kind of shoddy.. Anywho I mainly want to run a mame and a Saturn emulator along maybe with a similar CPS III emulator I have on my PC for the SF III series... I think I want a fat ps3 to run it though, so I think I'll be searching for one second hand in the coming months.. Plus SACD and BC to PS2 is already intriguing as well.

FBA will be able to do most CPS 1&2 and NeoGeo. It has been signed for 3.55 and is working. It can emulate other machines but I haven't tested them yet.

I very much doubt it. I don't think PS2 games even use eboot, let alone SELF... How would it even work? Seriously? That's just crazy talk. The code isn't even compatible, it's RISC not PPC which is what the PS3 natively understands. What you're saying is akin to trying to play a Dreamcast game on a PS2 by editing an executable (however you should be able to trick the PS3 into booting a different game as long as there is a genuine PS2 game in the drive to boot it into PS2 mode. All it takes is to redirect the syscalls, which is what the backup managers do anyway. Hence Multiman having flaky support for PS2 backups). All this hack does is change where the PS3 looks for the files. Yes, the PS3 is that dumb all it takes to get 'ISO loading' working is editing a few bytes of text in a SELF... So much for industry leading security...

Worst thing Sony ever did was remove Linux from the system. That was like saying "OMG LOL YOU HACKERS ARE SUCH FUCKING PUSSIES YOU WILL NEVER HAX OUR SYSTEM" then proceed to wave their fingers at them, making 'wanker' gestures and just basically being dicks. Challenge Accepted.

Can somebody explain what ELF and SELF is/are? I've been following this since day one, and I understand just about everything up until the SELF/ELF terminology..
Is it like the PS3 version of a Registry?

edit: Also, since this is only a CFW update, not a full-blown mod-hack, is there any potential for bricking the system or any other risk that would be beyond repair..?

Nah not really a chance of a brick, there's no hack. It's using the exact same method Sony themselves use to create their own firmware. If the pup is corrupted it won't install anyway because the PS3 still does the encryption check as if it is official. Since the encryption method is the same as Sony's it will either verify the hashes and proceed to install, or it won't. Simple as. As long as you are getting the pup from a reputable source then you'll be fine.

ELF is the executable format that the PS3 uses. Same as the PS2. It is packaged inside a secure binary called an EBOOT.BIN. This a SELF (Secure ELF).

I'm currently trying to get Gran Turismo 5 edited and signed. I've decrypted the ELF, edited dev_bdvd to dev_hdd0, now I'm just waiting for makeself to encrypt my elf (could take a long time due to the encryption algorithm). Then I just need to make a psn package using geohots tools and should be good to go.

I am so lost :(
I will make my neighbor figure it all out for me.
Im guessing there is no way to do this thru the ps3s browser?
really stupid question but hey fingers crossed.
Itd be great if it was that simple
another question just popped in my head.will i still be able to use my ps3 online for games?
i mean since it shows you what people on your friends list are doing wouldnt be possible for sony to see what you're actually doing?
i understand that it tells the ps3 that you're using sony software but isn't it possible that sony would know that you're not?
or am i just being paranoid in thinking that sony knows what i'm doing on my console at all times?

Best if you don't attempt anything at all if you can't grasp simple concepts.

1. Why would you want to do this through the PS3 browser? Just copy the PUP to your memory stick IE X:/PS3/UPDATE/ where X is the root of your memory stick. Then go to System Update -> Via Removable Storage.
2. It will work online and any games bootable via CFW (whether that's legit or via PKG method) will work too for the time being.
3. Don't know
4. Who knows?
5. No idea.

Unfortunately, the new firmware patch that was going to allow backup managers didn't work, so the hackers who put it together are trying it again.
