Best way to learn Japanese?

5 years of Japanese MMORPGs, along with watching raw anime when I ate worked great for me.

IF you can, live there. It is the only true way. And if you do live there, DON'T HANG OUT WITH NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS. That is how I learned. I am back in the USA now, but I still speak Japanese on a daily basis since my fiance is Japanese. If I didn't have her, I probably would have lost a lot of skill by now.

If you can't move there, then as said before, surround yourself with the language. Complete immersion is the only way to do it. It is a long, hard road to get a grasp of this language, but the work you put into it will pay off.

Make Japanese friends, too. Speak to them in Japanese the best you can. If you live near a big city, it is not hard to find language exchange partners. Craigslist is a great source for this, believe it or not.

Again, the best way is being there. Being forced to speak Japanese helps a lot more than doing it when you feel like it.

I have been taking college courses in Japanese for the last 3 semesters (about to start my 4th in the next week or so), and It has really been working out well, and I have been enjoying the classes.

This is a good blog to read, really stresses immersion. There's some really good stuff in there about how to keep motivation up and where to start. Don't feel that classes are a must, I took three years of classes and they either moved too slow or I wasn't motivated because after a while Japanese just became more schoolwork than stuff I actually wanted to do. Also if you have an iPhone/iPod touch there are a lot of great applications. Kanji Flip is one I recommend for when you're ready to start learning Kanji as its a flash card program you can use to study anywhere.

Thank you guys so much!! ^_^ This was all really helpful information. I'm gonna start with Livemocha (and the drunk guy on YouTube) tonight. My girlfriend/won't-ditch-me-forever-if-we-break-up friend has also recently begun learning Japanese, and a friend of mine is already reading kanji manga. I'm also gonna try that website someone said that sets you up with a Japanese person learning english on a regular basis too.

Along with that, I'm gonna immerse myself in Japanese in as many ways as possible. Starting with flash cards, and Japanese video games that aren't RPG's. Step it up to Japanese anime with english subtitles, and eventually watching Japanese anime and reading manga without any problems at all. Since I already pirate most of my retro games, obtaining Japanese copies will be easy.

Thank you guys!!

I would actually skip the step where you watch anime with English subtitles and just go into it raw with no subs. Subtitles tend to hamper how quickly you pick up on the language.

You would be surprised how much you'll be able to infer from just the visuals and watching without subs will help immerse you more in the language, as you'll be more actively listening to one language instead of trying to listen to a language you don't know while focusing on reading a language you do know.

HAha! That drunk guy is surprisingly helpful ain't he? If I ever feel like it, I'll probably watch all his movies too. Plus he's funny.
