Moz... figuratively it isn't. Technically it is.

The ROM name given to the data ripped from a cartridge comes from the type of storage used on the cartridge. A solid state ROM chip. ROM means only "Read only memory" as we all know... and a CD... or CD-ROM has the word ROM in it as well to represent "read only memory" because printed CDs are not writable or re-writable. The name for the file is not a metaphor for "read only", it is a misnomer for what the file is a copy of.

So technically ROM is a name suitable for an ISO by standards of how ROM was selected to name the images of cartridge games. But in the end ROM is a poor choice for both of them. Neither are Read only, but instead images of a Read only source.

Luckily it is only slang and we've decided to call cart imagese ROM and CD game images, "Image, ISO... etc..." actually I don't think there is any one name given for them. I've always called them "disc images", and cart copies "ROM images, or ROM for short".

The OP should know that yes, in the underground gamer community, "rom" is reserved for cartridge images.

I also wouldn't of helped the guy out personally, just because I don't think people should be going around telling everyone about places to get them. Nor do I think "web-sites" sharing disc images to be right. But I guess I'm old school where finding disc images required digging through the interwebs, finding IRC channels and forums that discretely discussed them, then hopefully locating some FTP server or IRC chatroom with people willing to share. In the end requiring you to usually go out and just purchase the game instead.

I remember in 98' when I looked for my first disc image of a Sega CD game (Shining Force CD), I spent 2 months looking... I read up on how to burn images, the stuff I needed to burn them and play them, and all kinds of information. I located small communities about it and everything. By the time I located my first FTP server to download from I had already known everything about putting it all together that I didn't really have to go bugging tech forums all over the place. I had already been through the depths of their forums and read old posts about it already. Thusly not requiring post # 8,763 about "how to burn roms" or more importantly due to the relevance of this thread... post #10million "where do I get disc images?"

Luckily for the OP, now a days there is an abundance of information on the web and a mere 2 hours of searching would of given him all the information he needed. Instead out of sheer laziness... he had to create yet another post about it. Then disapear into the darkness as yet another racketboy.com member with 2 posts.

...
I also hate how you can now download a whole collection of games in 2 hours. I remember it took me 7 days to get all of Panzer Dragoon Saga... it felt like an accomplishment! Bigger was when I bought it for only 30 dollars off a guy in New Jersey for a PAL copy... how he had a PAL copy and didn't know the value was beyond me.

The sting of pwnage. It especially stings when I learn nothing new. I knew everything you just said but over all the years, I never put 2 and 2 together, and just look at the ROM in CD-ROM. Man...breakthrough.

At least we agree on everything else.

That reminds me of what I say to people when they ask for ROMs on forums with clear anti-warez rules. "Do your own piracy."
