Wii was probably the most wide open console and it didn't damper it any against the competition.. Also the Xbox still beat out the GC last generation even though that was hacked to pieces as well..
I just realized that the expression went right over my head...

Already possible. You just need a minimus AVR or something similar (teensy, arduino, hell even a TI84 or an iPhone 2G can do it) and firmware version 3.41. The only emulator missing is an N64 emulator, but N64 emulation on the Xbox wasn't exactly anything to shout about.

Don't worry it will come. It will just take the devs a short while to get their heads round signing retail packages. I've tried to take source code and make pkg (under linux) and then sign it but it doesn't quite work like that for some reason. There's something missing and no matter how much I read the documentation I can't figure it out. I can make pkgs from source for 3.41 any day of the week but getting them signed properly is tricky.
That is good news but, why only 3.41? I thought this "master key" was supposed to work on every firmware version. :?

Because you have to re-sign homebrew with the new key, since they were coded for the old exploit.

The 3.41 USB exploit has nothing to do with master keys. Once people figure out how to properly package and sign a program, then it can run on any PS3.

Re: Linux returns to PS3. + 3.55 CFW!

Post by Niode »

George Hotz has just released a custom firmware for 3.55. Install it right over 3.55 with a signed PSPUPDATE.PUP. Old homebrew still doesn't work yet, all it does is add the ability to install pkg files from external memory. The homebrew will still need signing. Geohot is releasing signing tools soon. So as soon as they're available you can bet your ass I'm compiling the hell out of all the open source emulators I have access to (I have a Ubuntu virtual box with PSL1GHT, GTK, GIT etc all installed which I've used to make my own pkgs) so when it drops I'll compile them, sign them and put them up on my Dropbox or something for you guys to have.

I've already got it installed on my system. PSN is working again. So I've finally got the PSN games I own back on my system.

This sounds like great news! Thanks for keeping us up to snuff with all the news, Niode! I can't wait to see some of the awesome stuff that comes of all this!

Quick question: Can PS3 Backup Manager be run without the PS3 Sticks, now? If so, can I use GeoHot's firmware or am I going to have to stick with 3.41?

The XBox might have beat out the GC in units shipped, but it posted a US$30 million loss over it's lifespan, whereas the GC was in the black from day one.

Sales don't always equal profit, especially when you're selling a console at a loss (and people are then hacking it into a media centre, without buying a single game for you to recoup your losses).

Not yet because Lv2 access is blocked off for the time being. This CFW does not enable lv2 peek/poke so syscalls aren't possible, yet. This means that backup managers aren't possible yet. Think of it like usermode and kernel mode on the PSP. When the usermode exploits came out you could only run emulators/homebrew but no iso loaders until they patched in kernel mode access in CFW.

I'm not installing a custom firmware until someone releases one that can run a backup manager, just to be safe. Has anyone been banned on PSN for having a hacked PS3 yet? Also, what is the difference between Geohot's CFW and KaKaRoTo's CFW?
