Anyone ever use the service menu to adjust CRT settings?

Post by Jamisonia »

We all know that CRTs are prone to some issues some as overscan that cause the picture to out of alignment. Some are worse than others. Has anyone ever used the service menu to correct this?

I went to the service menu sometime ago on my old RCA 27''. Fixed a little bit of underscan/overscan. I need to do that on my Sony Wega HD CRT, atleast for NES. But whats funny, is only mario bros/mega man 3 show underscan with that bar on the left, so I just need to shift it.

But yeah, just be careful when going into the service menu.

Also keep in mind, if you're trying to adjust NES overscan/underscan it will usually be fruitless. Some games have a bar on the left, while others don't. I've adjusted it to make it almost perfect, but games like castlevania still get the top right cut off. I just left it how it is, since adjusting the H Position/size affects all inputs, which is dumb. Made my other inputs get cut off :(

On my Sony Wega HD CRT, Wii/N64/GC/PS2 all look fine and nothing cut off. It is just the NES with that nasty blue vertical line and the like. Developers just didn't have any standards when it came to overscan and positioning menus, much the same with TV broadcast. Fix one problem, create another

And one reason I love my DVDO Edge, which has Saturn/Genesis/Neo Geo etc connected to it, is adjusting the underscan/overscan of these retro systems. It remembers each individual input so I can change one inputs overscan instead of everything.

In any case if you have overscan on all inputs, then it would be a good idea to experiment to try to fix it. Just remember to write down your original values before hand.
