hard-drive failure

Post by mason »

I have a wd hard-drive that randmonly stopped working after I gave my computer a beat down. Whenever my computer boots up, the hard-drive is not recognized, nor is it listed in the bios and auto-detect doesn't work either.
So how would I restore what's left of the hard-drive?

I have had good results in taking the HDD out and put it in the freezer for about an hour or 2 .. no im not kidding... It makes the metal contract and you might get a little life back into it. Then hook it back up to your computer ... hold the drive and see if its spinning or if its trying to spin. I have found that if the drive is not spinning but making a noise it could be the heads are stuck on the surface of the platers and you might need to give it a light smack on the top of the drive while the power is on. this may free the heads from the platers.

Do all this at your own risk .. I cant guarantee it will work but I have had success with doing this.
Hope this helps..

Selfdestroyer is right... Using the freezer does help. It causes the metal to contract which could put something back in place if its out of place.

if you are putting it in the freezer, I do recommend you put it in a plastic bag first so it doesn't sit directly on ice or anything like that.

If freezing doesnt work, try freezing it then running it upside down. For some reason that has started to work for me (especially on 2.5inch drives)
