My new Plasma has developed a strange black vertical line...

Post by Jamisonia »

Thought I'd see if anyone good help me with this. I bought a new Samsung Plasma TV in November and after watching the Pacific I noticed on one episode a very thin vertical line in the upper right, only really visible when a shot of the sky is being displayed. I messed around with the settings, and noticed it only showed up on the Blu Ray Player. You couldn't see it on the Plasma's internal pictures, the cable feed, or on my Wii. Then I went back to the Blu Ray Player and it was gone, so I didn't think anything of it.

Today I'm watching Back to the Future III and I notice it again near the end of the movie. Mind you I just watched the first two in the past two days and didn't notice it then. I also noticed the line appears where the BD player displays the pause, fast forward, play, etc. box. So I pop in a DVD and the line is gone. It only displays it when displaying a 1080p source. I thought it might be image retention so I ran the Plasmas white to black bar scrolling feature that alleviates that, and I can't see the line when that's on. I can only see it when watching sources on BD player that are in 1080p. Unfortunately I have no other source of HD material to test.

Any ideas what might be going on? Is the the TV, or more likely the BD player or HDMI cable?

Your plasma is new and they have what I like to call image retention. If you watch something in a 4/3 ratio(standard tv) or cropped widescreen, the tv will leave a non permanent black separation at the edge of the moving portion of the picture. To fix this simply watch something that uses the entire screen for a while with no static images and it will go away. :)

bring your bd player with movie exact scene and your hdmi cable to someone else and test and or bring someone else´s bd player to your set. experiment.
Whatever machine has this failure return it immediatly!
if it´s the tv take another model.
You might want to search avforums to check is simalar thing are happening for other customers with said tv/ bd player.
good luck.

would image retention only appear when watching a HD source? Both The Pacific and Back to the Future were on Blu Ray. But the black line disappeared when I played a DVD, or my Wii, but I went back to the BD afterwards and it was there again.

Does your DVD player/Wii take up the whole screen? Movies in general don't take up the whole screen as they are in a different aspect ratio than 16:9 usually. That could be why

Everything is in 16:9. The Pacific was an HBO miniseries so it was shot in that aspect ratio, and BTTF is in that aspect ration thats essentially 16:9 so thats how its displayed. Today its gone.

To me it sounds like it is your bluray player/settings. If the problem was the tv then it would show the same problem on multiple devices. Also make sure you try your bluray player on another hdmi slot. It may be a bad input. If that is the case, just swap your tv for a new one of the same model.
