Ok, so I'm really not that versed in the series. I'm familiar with Metal Gear on the NES. And then I know MGS on PS1. I know MGS on GBC and Twin Snakes on GameCube.
but I'm confused on the other games... why is there multiple titles for the same numeral entry in the series?
MGS 2: Sons Of Liberty
MGS 2: Substance
MGS 3: Snake Eater
MGS 3: Subsistence
so what's the deal? Are the two MGS2's different games? Or... ?
Can somebody explain the Metal Gear Solid series to me?

Sorta like a SUPER Street Fighter game

Substance and Subsistence are the "definitive" versions of each game. Substance has extra modes, training missions, a few new story missions and the PS2 version even has a skate minigame. Subsistence also has a few extras and you can move the camera, which is the best part.

You are an old fart trying to prevent nuclear catastrophe. You like smoking, shooting, and hiding in boxes. If you feel like you're on some psychotropic drugs, it's most likely because you are...
or you're just old.
The End.

also Twin Snakes is a remake of the ps1 game, and the GBC one is great but non-canon.

would be worth listinin to Ep 43 of retronauts as they discuss the series in depth.

Definitely look for the Substance and Subsistance versions.
I think its the same SKU used at Gamestop!
Another one to grab: the elusive PS2 Document of Metal Gear, great stuff!

Waiting till noise discovers Mesal Gear Solid in Ape Escape 3.
