I might be the forum's biggest MKII fan, unless some one comes out of the wood work after this post. And if some one does, I'll fight you for the title via the PS3!

MK II is the only one I really care about... they hit it on the head with that one. 3 was awesome in it's day but with the running and silly combos and stupid new characters (a cop? STRIKER?!... whatever) it doesn't really interest me anymore. Though Sub-Zero's ice shower is a cool move and the Cyborgs are pretty awesome. Reptile never got any cooler than he was in MK II though.

Yeah, MKII is definitely the high point of the series, and it's all downhill from there. I like MK3, but not nearly as much as MKII. The thing about MK games, there's always a ridiculous story, and back story, to every character in every game. The story explains every thing in the games, even the stages. MKII takes place mostly in outworld, while MK3 takes place on Earth which is why there's stages like the street, subway, bank, etc. Everything is explained, like why there IS cyborg robots, smoke becomes a cyborg while Sub Zero remains human but no longer dresses as a ninja of his clan, etc.

MK3 felt decent enough, but I hated the combo systems and whatnot. Also, the fatalities weren't nearly as cool as MKII. And they weren't even animated good (hands along with torso). And the graphics didn't seem as well tuned as MKII, like it took a step back almost. I always got the overall impression that they didn't spend a lot of time making that game.

Admittedly though, Midway was milking the formula by the time MK3 came out. Why else did we get Mortal Kombat III, Ultimate Mortal Kombat III, and then Mortal Kombat Trilogy almost back to back, followed by Midway's "MK in 3D" experiment War Gods, and then Mortal Kombat 4. The company had realized the concept was stale by 1996, hence War Gods and MK4 getting made (War Gods isn't related by plot, but it is effectively a dry run for 4).

I forget what it's called, but there was a fighting game made by one of the guys who left the MK team... it had bone breaking in it and it generally was an absolute piece of crap game. Anyone remember that one?

At least there's a some what reasonable explanation to it. MK3 was released and people complained that all their favorite characters were gone. "Who the hell are these stupid people?" I remember thinking that. So they released an upgrade to the arcades which added in mostly characters and stages (UMK3) and it got a home console port as well. Then there was Trilogy, which was only released for the home consoles. This was an awesome release, one game that including almost EVERYTHING from the past MK games. It's the best thing they put out since MKII.

Comparing this to the many upgrades Street Fighter 2 got, it doesn't seem too bad at all. If you want to count MK Trilogy as an upgrade to MK3, and not as a stand alone collection, then MK3 only got 2 upgrades.

It seems to me that folks here want classic mk gaming just on newer formats. Kinda redundant statement here on this retro site tho.

I guess it is like kiss fans: they buy it because it is kiss, but at the end of the day they will choose love gun over psycho circus. Meaning that the new might be good, but the old will always be better.
I just want to separate the cereal from the mouse mask.

I'm fairly certain that's Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus.
