So what is it that made it fun? I mean, I never played them but I just see it as collecting different pokemons and battling them. It doesn't seem like there's any skill involved.
My daughter has played most of the Pokemon games. I think her favorite one was Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Sky. She said that the ending made her cry.

to me it just comes off as a bit of a simplified RPG. You find a creature, level it up, fight. Like I said, I'm not really a fan -- but I had some fun with Yellow.
Mainly I think it comes down to the variable ratio schedule on which you find the pokemon. It's highly reinforcing. The battles aren't brainless either, you have to keep track of who's weak to what effects. And the production values are high, all the pokemon are nicely drawn. That's enough to make a compelling game, but I wouldn't say you're missing out on much by not playing it.

I played them but I just see it as collecting better equipment and battling random monsters. It doesn't seem like there's any skill involved.
It requires as much skill as any other RPG in single player mode. Against human opponents the system really shines.

There is absolutely no skill involved...if you just play the game. You can level up your Pokemon to high levels and wipe the floor clean with everyone. But if you're facing human players, you need skill. Chances are, if two players have similar teams but one knows how to use theirs, even if they have some disadvantage, the skilled player will win.
Seriously, with all the interest in Pokemon lately, maybe I ought to open up a tutoring school for Racketboy.

I'm 28 years old and I used to be really into the original Pokemon games. I had Red, Blue and Yellow, along with Pokemon Stadium on the N64. I played all of those games to death and had a ton of fun. When Silver/Gold came out and I saw them release like 100 more monsters, I got kinda annoyed and gave up on Pokemon games.
It's fine if they release a few new ones but releasing so many new monsters with every release is insane. I am one of those OCD gamers that needs to 100% complete my game. With the original 151 monsters, I had all of them at level 100 with perfect stats and movesets. Yes, I used gameshark to make sure they had perfect stats since they normally vary a bit.
Anyway, I still think the Pokemon games are great and I would play some of the newer ones if I wasn't already so busy playing other games. Plenty of the games I play are childish, but I don't give a fuck. There is nothing wrong with an adult playing Pokemon, Kirby or Mickey Mouse games.
Oh, I played a bunch of Pokemon de Panepon on the Game Boy Color a few months ago. I know it's not really a Pokemon game but it was cool seeing a Panel de Pon game with a Pokemon theme to it.

Pokemon Puzzle Challenge is the second best puzzle game behind Tetris. If they made Pokemon Tetris, they would get my money seconds after it was announced.

See, what does it for me about this game is how addicting it is to catch every damn creature I end up fighting. For once in an RPG, I love the feeling I get when the screen changes from map to battle mode and I'm about to possibly confront a brand new pokemon I haven't had the chance to catch yet, (followed by the overwhelming feeling of anger when I realize I'm out of pokeballs! ) It's that kind of competitive edge and entitlement I feel when I look on my collection of creatures caught that makes me come back for more and more!
And it's perfect for me because when I get busy, I can save it any time and just pick right back up at a later time!

Absolutely, where do you think the persona series got its weakness/strength ideas from???
