Re: Egg Man or Robotnik?

Re: Egg Man or Robotnik?
I think the point is whether you are Japanese or American (or Nintendo or Sega) we all are aware of both the names. If someone calls him Eggman, anyone who ever played the games or was around for the height of Sonics success will know who you are talking about.
It was also mentioned that Eggman fits better with his obsession with eggs. Does he not also have an obsession with changing animals into Robots?
I think Robotnik sounds more villainous. Eggman makes him sound squishy to me. My nephews love the Sonic games and shows and call him both of the names.

Sure, but he doesn't also happen to look like a robot, and killer robots were already familiar to gamers as an "evil scientist" hobby since Dr. Wily popularized it in MegaMan (or Rockman, if you'd rather.) So, Eggman is at least two for one, arguably two for two.PixelPixii wrote:It was also mentioned that Eggman fits better with his obsession with eggs. Both names are well known and officially correct, so it baffles me that one name or the other will anger some people.

But when mentioned as being an "obsession" of eggs I think of compulsory repetition relating to the character, not the gamers. Just like he has an obsession/love/interest in egg shapes or objects, he also likes using robots.flamepanther wrote:Sure, but he doesn't also happen to look like a robot, and killer robots were already familiar to gamers as an "evil scientist" hobby since Dr. Wily popularized it in MegaMan (or Rockman, if you'd rather.) I don't care for either name over the other, I have referenced him with both names. Just showing the fairness of both names. After all, as a gamer I fight against Robotnik because he changes innocent creatures into robots, not because he is shaped like an egg. Being an egg shaped man does not make him evil, it is his evil deeds that do.

Wouldn't that be your opinion? My actual name is Josh, but on the internet they call me the King. My original and official name is Josh, but my wife calls me Dumbass. I answer to that. These are facts. You can have any opinion you want but it's important to understand that fact > opinion.Inazuma wrote:

Not really. When a "translator" changes a character name, the "fact" is that the character already had a name. They're just forcing their opinion (that some other name is better) onto everyone else in their target market. Translators should stick to the facts of what's in the material they're translating instead of making it a platform for their own opinions, because fact > opinion. Inazuma hating that a characters name is translated or changed is an opinion. Just like if I said I like that the name was changed is an opinion. It has nothing to do with what the original name was or what it was changed to or why it was changed. Word to the bird.flamepanther wrote:Not really. Re: Egg Man or Robotnik?
Inazuma hating that is an emotion. That he feels this emotion is a fact, although one not really relevant to anyone else. If he says it's bad or it's wrong, then that's an opinion. "Fact > opinion" is an opinion though. What do we do with that one?the King wrote:Inazuma hating that a characters name is translated or changed is an opinion.
