Nintendo needs to follow suit and start calling Bowser Koopa again, since that is the actual name.

That's King Koopa to you, buddy.

That's ridiculous. If that's how names worked everyone would be calling me Sir Hotbod Handsomeface.

Come on, I thought you were supposed to be "Mr. Logical Thinker."
Even if his name was "Super Sexy and Kind Woman Who is Sonic's Best Friend the World's Number One Animal Lover", that would be his name. It's not up to us to determine the name of this character. His original and official name is Eggman. Even if the English version still called him Robotnik, that's not his real name. It would just be his name in the English version.

If I create my own comic book character and name him "Strong Steve", that's his name and unless you can manage a way to actually change his name, it will be Strong Steve, regardless of any opinion you may have.

Anyway, it all comes down to facts and opinions. You can have any opinion you want but it's important to understand that fact > opinion.

I wonder how different this topic would look in a more Japanese-centric forum. Keep in mind that when they introduced the "Eggman" name over here, they also introduced the "Robotnik" name in Japan.

"Robotnik" makes me think less of the character in the games, and more of the version from the American cartoons and comics. Besides being shaped like one, the character in the games has an obsession with eggs (Death Egg, etc.) As a nickname, it makes sense and it sure brings all the other egg-themed gadgets in line. As a kid, I always wondered what was up with all the egg stuff. When I found out what the character was called in Japan, I was like "OHHhhhhhhh..."

Plus, it makes an awesome Beatles reference, what with the Eggman looking like a walrus and all that.

Anyway, there's not much sense arguing about it, since the official line is that "Eggman" is a nickname or an alias, and that "Robotnik" is the actual surname.

Indeed. I believe it's been clarified by SEGA itself that "Ivo Robotnik" is his legal name, and "Eggman" is kind of like a nickname. This was done to harmonize both the Japanese and Western views of the character, especially since the American side had been following much of the canon established by Sega of America and the Archie comics.

That statement is pure awesome and it makes it easier for me to call him by his proper name.

That's ridiculous! He doesn't look like a Steve at all!

Robotnik is not Eggman similarly Aeris is not Aerith. Sure bringing a correct translation might be done in good will but once the character name has been established for a few years changing it will never come out right.

Even if the correct name is better to some extent.

Exceptions: Nobody remembers the old 80's dub of Dragon Ball where all the names were changed. I certainly don't recall seeing any Dragon Power video games recently. Warriors of the Wind isn't really in demand compared to Nausicaa. I don't recall seeing any Dragon Warrior games recently. Been awhile since Bill and Lance have been called Maddog and Scorpion (now considered separate characters??). How about those Hammer and Spike guys from Double Dragon?

Actually, there are enough of these around that I'm not sure they can be considered the exception...
