Thoughts on PS3 Controllers

Post by Beak »

I'm in the market for another PS3 controller. Figured I ask you guys before I bought anything; do you have any suggestions/warnings about controllers (3rd party or not)?

I know it's a gamble getting 3rd party sometimes, so I wanted to ask before I did anything.

Thanks!

Good grief, why even consider 3rd party controllers? There is no point at all.

Just get a Dual Shock 3 and be done with it. The only reason to get a 3rd party controller is for a Hori mini-pad on the N64 or an ASCII fighting pad on the DC or PS1. Perhaps a Neo Geo or Saturn pad on PS3 for 2D games, but that isn't really 3rd party.

I thought this discussion was just about the Dual Shock 3 in general...

My only complaint is how expensive they are i mean COME ON!!! 45 bucks online?? 55 in store?!?! I'll just tell my friend to bring his own!

Yeah, they are expensive. Unfortunately third party offerings are pretty bad. It's always something... they can't get the Dpad right or the analog sticks have huge dead zones, etc.

Get the first party ones and get a set of these and be done with it.

Are those really that good? I've seen them but I just never bit the bullet on them.

Yeah seriously. Why? I've never had any issues w/the stock R2L2 triggers.

I would stick with the first party Sony controllers personally they work great and are reliable unlike the majority of third-party controllers. I have used the triggers and they work great especially in FPS games with the extra grip and comfort it adds. I would recommend them if you play shooters which use triggers very frequently. 8)

I wasn't so sure about them but after fumbling anchors one too many times in LP2 (I map it to L2), I needed a solution. Now I honestly don't think I could use a PS3 controller without them. They just give you more to grip and the boot design keeps my fingers from slipping. They take a few hours to get used to, but it's so worth it.

And they do not pop off. Unless you throw the controller... which I don't. And you shouldn't.

Nothing really to add to the OP's question, but I just wanted to chime in with a recommendation for the real triggers. Those things are amazing! Makes it way easier to comfortably play racing games (which tend to use R2 for gas), and in my opinion just makes the controller more comfortable overall. I highly recommend them, and they're cheap as hell, so you're not out much if for some reason you don't like it.
