Poll: Game Boy Player Land's Future

Post by noiseredux »

So as the new year approaches, I thought I'd bring this dilemma up again to you guys. I'm just looking for a bit of feedback on the future of the GBPL blog. I'm especially interested in hearing what regular readers think.

So here it goes:

when I started the GBPL blog it was basically a means of me talking about the games I was playing RIGHT NOW. Y'know? And at the time the only thing I played was GB, GBC, GBA and a the Cube. So the blog started out representing just that. However in the past year I've also gotten into a lot of other stuff. I got a Wii and a DS for instance. And my interest in shmups has even led me to rebuy a PS2 now.

My natural inclination is to continue the blog writing about well, whatever it is that I'm playing. I would do so with the same level of thoroughness as I'm a pretty anal person. I guess my reservation is that most readers now see it as y'know "the Game Boy blog" (which, with the title and all, I can understand). But in the past year I did start including some GameCube entries here and there.

Anyway, just looking for feedback. I guess the question is this: do you visit GBPL just because it's about GB, or is because you enjoy the writing or the style of the blog in general?

I suppose my fear is that if I were to keep it ONLY GB-related, then there's a chance that there could be some lulls between entries if some time went by where I was playing other stuff instead.

Anyway... thoughts?

EDIT:

I think that what most people are missing in the question is this:

If I spend time playing a ton of OTHER games this year, then I might write (let's just make up numbers) 20 GB related articles and 20 OTHER related articles.

So the question is would you rather see 20 GB articles and 20 OTHER articles, or 20 GB articles and NO OTHER articles?

I enjoy your writing and all, but I'dprefer it to stick to GB/GBC/GBA and gamecube myself. Your knowledge of obscure games aswell as big names for the systems, and the specialisation in some sort of handheld rather than the often talked about PS2 etc is why I love to read it.

I wouldn't be averseto you including DS as an extension to the Nintendo + handheld theme, but otherwise, I think it feels interesting because keeping it focused on one console (or a smaller selection at least) means I get to learn a lot more about that system and games then if you posted about anything and everything.

You should write about whatever you want. It's YOUR blog. Look at it this way: It's called Game Boy Player Land, right? Well, it could mean that your a gamer who plays the Game Boy, and it's your land. Get it? As such, your allowed to play others. You just tend to play the GB more than others.

Start a new blog and put it and GBPL under a Noise Redux themed umbrella. It will be very confusing, nomenclaturally speaking.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I voted to stick to the GB-stuff, per the reasons suggested by alienjesus. Really, there are already a ton of catch-all blogs, and I generally find them less interesting than those that focus on a particular niche and do it well.

I'm a regular reader (though I don't think I've commented), and I agree with both Desheinem and alienjesus. I'm sorry this isn't an interesting post, but the points I wanted to hit have already been made.

I think if your main focus was on Gameboy and had an occasional entry for another console it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Especially the DS and Wii. I think it's safe to say that people who are fanatics of the GB probably have games they like (or would like if they read about them) on the DS and Wii. They're still Nintendo platforms, so they have all the same franchise games (Mario, Zelda, Kirby, etc).

The other point I'm gonna make is if people like the game you write about, then it's safe to assume they have (some of) the same taste as you. So then we could assume that they might have the same likes as you outside of the GB.

You could do a separate blog for catch-alls, and then
link from on your GB blog. Even better, make no indication
toward the fact the blog is yours, and plug the holy hell
out of it on your already established GB blog. Mind, the ship has
kinda sailed on that notion, as I anticipate that a sizable chunk
of your readership is based off these boards.

I definitely have no intention of a second blog. I just don't have the time or energy. haha.
