Where did you hear that?

Sony has always said that they will stop supporting the PS2 when they stop selling and there's no longer any demand for it.

From Wiki:
"In late 2009, with developers creating new games and the console still selling steadily a decade after its original release, Sony stated that the life cycle of the PlayStation 2 will continue until demand ceases."

"The original life span for the console was set at 10 years, but according to Sony, its lifecycle will continue as long as developers continue to make new games for the system, and as long as the console and its games continue to sell."

Also, Sony only just launched the PS2 in Brazil and South Africa on November 18th 2009, and in Argentina on April 30th 2010. So they probably have plans to stick it out for quite a while longer.
The guy behind the counter at my local gamestore. It could just be company thing, but they way he phrased it lead me to believe it was a Sony matter. Interesting to note though, the life left in the old baby.

The guy behind the counter at MY local Gamestop told me that GBC games don't work on the GameCube GBPlayer, so...

Sony has MLB 11: The Show scheduled to launch this year for the PS2, so they didn't drop support. I'm guessing there are other smaller games still unannounced.

I'm scared, (not truly, like in a "I don't want it to happen) that the PS2 will outlive the 2600. (That was 12 years right?)

seeing how the dreamcast is still getting new games, and even the Mega Drive getting new games thanks to being a success in markets like Brazil, I believe the PS2 has at least another 5 years of niche titles coming its way. Will those titles see US release? I don't know. What I do know is that the PS2 in my local Media Markt has bigger self space than the 360, but that could be because mainland Europe hates the 360 and loves everything Playstation (...and PC...and handheld)
