Wii Goldeneye

Post by silverback »

Having bought the Goldeneye N64 new what must be 13 years back now I thought this would just be a cheap remake of a decent game on my least favourite current gen system.

I was sort of right.

Firstly I think the fact Daniel Craig has done it instead of Brosnan again is as good as a kick in the face to Pierce.

First controls, don't be a muppet like my sister trying to use the wii mote and nunchuck I used the gamecube controller to play it. Not tried the wii classic controller but I imagine it to be worse to use in all honesty. The controls are awkward, its no 360 controller where everything fits just right. Awkward button bash sequences are irritating.

graphics are typical wii, they look like they should be on a ps2. But graphics aren't the be all and end all.

Sound, its fair, voice acting is quite good.

Gameplay, what can I say? Its not great. The collision detection or whatever you want to call it is poor at times. Shooting a man in the face should kill him, but half the time it doesn't recognise it. Indeed often you can see the bullet tear a white hole in the bad guys head like tearing and thats it.

A lot of levels the best thing to do is just run through them, the nightclub early on for example, just run it and you won't die, stay and pick them off takes a long time and chances are you will be killed.

The bluetooth hacking, annoying, even worse is when you kill the bad guys you can rest there hacking then enemies just spawn right on top of you. The level towards the end on the approach to the station in the jungle is bad for this where you hack the sentry guns.

EDIT - reloading

I also forgot to put this in originally, reloading weapons, this is horrific. If any of you have even done any military service or weekend warrior stuff, you will know full well that changing a magazine in a weapon takes a fraction of a second and you never look at the gun when doing so. this is how your killed in the field.

i find the fact a supposed secret agent with military training cannot operate a gun quickly and effectively without looking at it ridiculous. For those that don;t know when reloading in the game the screen goes out of focus aside from the gun and takes an age to reload.

Would I play it again? not likely. Would I have paid full price for this game? not a chance. better than the n64 version? Yes, but anything 13 years younger should be better in this situation!

Recommend it?

This is tricky.

As a FPS I would rate this quite low, theres a lot of other fps games that are far far better and would encourage several play throughs.

So as a FPS game I say 4/10

As a Wii game on a console that i don't really rate thats not designed for FPS games however I would say 7/10

Worth a rent over a buy.

You can do it in a day first time out the box, probably in 2 hours if you try it on easy.

I had a lot of negative things to say about the single player in this thread:

But you really should try the Classic Controller Pro. Best option in my opinion, as well as several others on this forum. The original Classic Controller is probably the worst thing to use, but the new Pro version is more like a PS2 controller. I was skeptical as hell when it first came out, but after actually using it, I love it. I think it's more comfortable than a PS2 controller.

Your review doesn't include anything about the multiplayer though? It's definitely the best part about this game. You should check it out, if you haven't already. We're all having a blast playing together in this thread:

i forgot to mention that, I never play multiplayer games.

Just the one time of several idiot 13 year old foul mouthed brats put me off for life in all honesty.

So indeed I cannot say anything about its multiplayer abilities.

i'll look into the classic controllers again, i thought about getting the gold one with the game but I remembered the old one and didn't like it so I left it.

I'll check out those threads you linked to.

Classic controller is the way to go if you don't like gamecube controller. As for the single player, I though the level design was good and the game was balanced forth most part. The Bluetooth was a fun change from the norm and cutscenes were appropriately used to unfold the story. The multiplayer is where the game shines and has a great local and multiplayer. I'd give this game a 8.5 for console fps and 9.0 for a Wii game. This is a great fps changing from the norm (anonymous soldier/space marine).

You and me both. This is the first time I'm playing a FPS online in a long time. Best part about it, there's no communication between players! You don't have to worry about kids yelling at you.

Thanks for this review. As a fan of the original, I was naturally curious about this Wii remake.

The one thing most mortifying to me about this game was loadouts. Half the fun of Goldeneye was desperately rushing to see who got the RCP-90 first, and then mowing down the poor schmuck stuck with the Klobb.
