I just got my Saturn mod chip in the mail yesterday, got it from here too, and when me and my friend tried to install it we must have screwed something up...
We followed the guide here, and the install went pretty smoothly. The chip fit nice, we used the A-B method for the signal wire, and attached the power wire in the right spot. When we tested it, the Saturn skipped the boot animation, and went right into CD mode, didn't spin the drive, and didn't move the lens.
After several times of checking soldering, checking connections, re-seating the ribbon, and mod chip, we came up with nothing.
We then decided to take the mod chip out, and just try again another day, but after removing the mod chip, and replacing the ribbon in its original place, the system still skips the boot animation, won't spin the disc, won't move the lens, and moves right into CD mode.
The system was working several hours before when I was playing it, so the drive did work fine, but now it doesn't. I'm worried that I've gone and pretty much destroyed my ribbon from moving it around too much, but maybe I'm overlooking something.
Btw, while in CD mode, there are 2 plain cubes, as I'm told that 2 large red circles is very bad, and that 2 puffed up cubes are normal. This shows whether the mod chip is in or not.
Hope you guys can help me out!
EDIT: Forgot to mention, I have a Model 2 Sega Saturn, 32-Pin IC, 21-Pin ribbon, and it's not a Sanyo drive Model 2.

when this same thing happened to me years ago it turned out it was the ribbon cable. you said you checked it, but i would look at it again. if it is indeed securely connected, you may have damaged it.

Is it possible you accidentally soldered two pins together or something was linked by accident when removing? I'd check that.

The ribbon doesn't look fantastic, but it looks like it should be able to transport data fine.
As for the soldering, what do you mean soldering two pins together, we didn't solder to the 14th pin?

Is the ribbon cable plugged in the right way?

If the ribbon isn't supposed to twist, then yes it's in properly.
EDIT: I just reseated the cable again, now it still won't read any discs or spin or anything, but the square on the Left side of the CD player mode, is now puffed out. Don't know if this means anything, but since puffed out squares seem to mean it's working, sounds like I'm halfway there...

Check the connection of the chip's red power wire to the PIN. when mine came loose it wouldn't spin the discs... so then I pretty much filled that little plastic cubby area with solder. that wire is going nowheres. hehe

The mod chip isn't currently in, I removed it, even the power cable is removed, it should be operating like a normal Saturn.
EDIT: After another attempt to re-seat the ribbon, I did get my Saturn to work normally. Unfortunately, it seems to be pretty badly damaged, but I have confirmed it to be the ribbon itself, and not anything super major like the CD drive. I'm going to order another ribbon online here in a few days, so thanks for all the help guys!
Happy New Years too!
EDIT 2: Just figured I'd put this here, in case anyone needs a new Sega Saturn 21-Pin CD Ribbon, just look for the Sega Style Shop
